Word, Namo. Some of the best songs ever written were from the pop, rock, country, and R&B genres.

Although this is only an opinion, I must say that I disagree with what Namo and others have said. Wanting the company of others with similar interests is completely natural, especially when you have a passion for those interests. It's not about having a "pity party" or needing attention, its about finding a group of people who, not only accept one another, but feed off of each other's excitment. Everyone should have that kind of support system.
StageManager, don't start to feel guilty about feeling the way you do. There are many many like you and it'll be so awesome when you find them. Expanding your interests is always wonderful, but don't do it in order to fit in better with others.

Exactly. FIND them. Don't try to convert others who clearly aren't going to share this aspect of what you enjoy.
I not odd.... everyone else is.

I understand how you feel. When i was in high school, everyone would always ask me what i was listening to. When i would say Rent or les mis, i would get a snicker and they'd roll their eyes. I never looked to anyone to go to shows with me though, i knew i was different. Musical theater spoke to me in a way no other music could. To top it off though, I wasn't even accepted by the drama kids. I was too introverted. I think you just have to learn to stand on your own legs, and not give a care about what anyone else thinks. Know that your opinions and feelings are just as valuable as anyone elses. Just because your the minority in a group, doesn't mean you should feel bad about it. Alot of the times, the majority doesn't have a clue.

I think it's funny when people say "don't care about what others think" when the issue is something that's negative or otherwise bothersome.
If someone came here and said they'd sung some song in class and gotten great feedback on it, or if they'd just gotten a great review at their job and a raise, who'd tell 'em "Don't care about what others think."?
Threadjack over! Unless someone else wants to take it...

Of course everyone likes nice feedback, however, negative feedback can sometimes stop you in your tracks, and you need to know how to deal with it. Its unrealistic to say don't care, but its not letting it affect you in such a way that it ruins you. For me, i try to take things people say and see if it really has any meaning. Sometimes its constructive criticism, which i always welcome, other times it just being mean and it stems from something lacking from within the person who said it or just plain ol' ignorance. I guess you just have to decide for yourself if this person has the right to take your spirit away from you just because your different.. Err, i dunno if this even makes any sense. But i hope someone understands what i'm trying to say, bad grammar and all :o)
greencup, the reason I like musical theater is NOT because the majority do not. And Lizzie, I will take your advice and try to find others who share my interest in musicals (any suggestions?). I'm on the timid side, so I'll definitely be acting against type, so to speak. Thanks everyone who contributed.
I totally see where you are coming from, I know I can relate.
