Tommy Tune in my home town of Denver!
I had to get to the buell theater to see this Broadway legend! I got a $10.00 ticket in the way back.
I would have to say that my favorite part of this show was the curtain. It sort of had a campy old fashioned look to it. As the curtain went up, it all went downhill from there. It was pretty obvious that Tommy Tune did not care about this performance of the show. He delivered every line with no feeling and was very relaxed when it came to dancing.
Doctor Doolittle was really the first time I ever felt uncomfertable for actors on stage. The actors operating the puppets looked like idiots because the puppets were so hideous!
Dee Hoty was the only thing that was OK. Her voice was nice and at times she was believable. The moment that truly defined the show for me was right after Doolittle and Emma had a huge fight about how they hate eachother, Emma crosses downstage left and sings, " I think I like him! And I think he likes me too!" The show was filled with fast mood changes and random happenings.
At the end of the show Doolittle somehow recieves a letter from Emma when he is stuck in the middle of nowhere. It is urging him to come back to England. Then, a giant lunar moth appears and glitter starts falling from the sky and disco balls in the house start turning. The End.
But not really! Next, each chorus member takes an individual bow and then the curtain reopens to Doolittle coming back to Emma. She says, "Hello Dr. Doolittle" and he responds, "Hello Mrs. Doolittle" Well that one hell of a way tro propose isn't it? Next the chorusa preforms another 8 minute number and then finally Tune and Hoty come out in a wedding dress and a tuxedo to bow. Then Tune says, " Hey everybody! What did you think of the show! All of you children out there? Did you like it? You see we all come from New York. I wish that New York looked like Denver! New York is so, so dirty! I think we have to get our city planners out here!" Finally the curtain closed. As everyone else waited around for Tommy to sign his Lithographs in the lobby, I rushed out of the theater!
I think that Tune got lost in between the world of childrens theater and a true musical. All of the songs had large words in them and were very slow, but the book seemed like it was written by a three year old. The actors tried to deliver their lines in a way that children could think that they were funny, but they ended up being bland and unreal.
Please, save your money! This is by far the worst thing I have ever seen!

Posted: 2/12/06 at 3:26pmThanks for the review. I still don't know why they turned this flop movie into a theatre musical in the first place. And, in my book, Mr. Tune did himself no favors taking cheap shots at NYC.

Posted: 2/12/06 at 6:13pmIt has a recognition factor that investors mistakenly think will translate into sales esp to families and school groups. That's all I can think of.
