Interesting NY Magazine interview with Kate Baldwin. I'm assuming she's being Tongue-in-cheek.
When the music director of City Center's Encores! series approached Kate Baldwin about a revival of Finian's Rainbow, the 1947 Ireland-meets-Missitucky chestnut, Baldwin's response was surprisingly impolitic. "Oh, no," Baldwin remembers saying. That show sucks! I've done it twice and it never works!

I had the impression that she (and other cast members) felt that way at the start but like the show better after the retooling.

I'm more troubled by her apparent misunderstanding about the use of the n word in Show Boat.
I thought she was trying to be funny with the N word thing.

Maybe she's someone who tries to be funny and isn't?

Much like the show she's in.
It could also be a case of poor editing. As I read the article I felt as if something were missing and I was confused as to what was being said. A good journalist and editor can make even the most confusing quotes make sense.
Agreed, it's bad editing, and I don't like the interviewer, he seems smug.
Eris0303, I will agree with you. I had the same problem myself. I mean I do feel like the article/interview is too short to figure out what kind of person the guy doing the interview is. But, I did generally find it a little confusing.

We don't want to find out what kind of person the guy doing the interview is. We read this article to learn about Kate Baldwin. The interviewer should be an unseen force guiding the interview without making it about themselves.
Regardless, she is gorgeous in that photo!
