Posted: 4/21/06 at 8:39pmI like Dolly Parton, as a singer. I don't think she would be good in this. Take a look at the film version of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas". Ms. Parton's "acting" in "Whorehouse" was pretty dismal, especially in the dramatic scenes between Miss Mona and the Sheriff. Also, if she were to appear in "Dolly", would Jerry Herman be forced to through away some of his score so that Ms. Parton could include her own songs?

Posted: 4/22/06 at 7:16pmGreat casting idea... I could see it if they made TV movie out of DOLLY. Dolly doesn't have to be jewish... I'm assuming that she married a jewish man..but she herself could be anything.

"I love Dolly as an entertainer and as a citizen, but she can't act."
I thought she was great in Steel Magnolias personally. And I think this is a great idea! It would be so different..and her having the name obviously makes it adorable.

Posted: 4/22/06 at 7:31pmShe can act. Whorehouse isn't her best work, but I blame the direction and script for that.

Posted: 4/22/06 at 9:40pmI think she's charming, though I'm not a country fan. And I thought she was good in "Steel Magnolias". I'd see it if she did it.

All this talk of Dolly needing to lose her twang to be Dolly...
People, listen to Carol Channing talk. Ever. At any point in her life. Country, with just a bit of the boozehound.
Dolly PArton is, as far as I'm concerned, probably THE best choice of celebrity to play Dolly Levi.
I love you, BobbyBubby, for suggesting this.

Posted: 4/23/06 at 11:52amShe is AWESOME! Her lyrics and music are fantastic. I can't wait to see "Nine to Five." Her writing style is simply elegant. It is so honest and American. She even gets the ryhming and phrasing right for Broadway. At the very least, she should have shows at Dollywood.

Posted: 4/23/06 at 11:58amI like it! I'm just surprised that so many other people do, too.

Posted: 4/23/06 at 1:08pmDOlly Parton has a huge fanbase, gay, straight, country lovers, country haters. I'm not a country fan but I adore Dolly and her talents. I think as she gets older, she is becoming less absurd to the nay-sayers, and being respected for the legend she is.

Posted: 4/24/06 at 3:20amI love Dolly, one of my favorite performers. She was fabulous in Steel Magnolias, Nine To Five(of course) and Straight Talk. Straight talk should be proof she can be serious.

Streisand in the movie notwithstanding, Dolly Gallagher Levi clearly was never intended to be perceived as a woman who was born Jewish. In fact, in The Merchant of Yonkers, The Matchmaker, and Hello, Dolly! she makes a point of introducing herself as either "Mrs. Levi, born Gallagher" or "Mrs. Dolly Levi, born Gallagher." She's of Irish descent, and though there were Irish Jews, probably not many were named Gallagher. And Wilder's idea was clearly that both she and Ephraim were free spirits who married outside their religion without any qualms.
There's no reason why Dolly Gallagher Levi couldn't have been born of Irish descent in Tennessee and later moved North with her Jewish husband.
The idea of Dolly Parton in this role has been again and again suggested for years. It doesn't seem likely that she would ever commit to a long run on Broadway. A TV movie, sure.
Maybe Bert Reynolds could be Vandergelder. I'm not joking. He'd be good.

I'm not sure who Bert Reynolds is so he might be good, but BURT Reynolds would be awful!

"Who the hell would want to see Tovah as Dolly?
She looks better suited to pushing a potato cart than coming down a staircase."
Are you kidding me?

Posted: 5/14/06 at 11:04pmDolly as Dolly would be great! Because Dolly Parton is larger than life as she is normally, and to see her playing a larger than life character would be amazing! And she has the vocal chops to pull off the songs, considering that Carol Channing was able to pull it off. And Carol said in an interview that "Dolly was not meant to be a great singer" And Dolly has great comic timing. But highly doubtful it would ever happen, since she's working on 9 to 5 and she's working on a musical about her life. I say bring Cher in there and she can play Horace and Dolly!

I vote for Cher as Dolly! As Horace would say, she is a "wonderful woman"!

Posted: 5/14/06 at 11:16pmYou know it! Cher was supposed to play Mame in a TV movie.

i think she'd be fantastic, but i dont think she'd be interested in a long-term engagement.
Dolly *loves* moving on to the next project!

Posted: 5/14/06 at 11:27pmYeah if she came in for like a 6 week engagement replacing someone that would be good.

Posted: 5/17/06 at 3:16pmOkay, I am about to die of shock here. I think the idea is GREAT! and think it's also great that most of the people agree. I didn't think that would be the case. I've always thought that they should revive "Whorehouse" with her.
