Actually, some of the performers do set tempos. Donna had to ask the musical director (I think it was Alphonse Stevenson by 86, but it could have been Jerry Goldberg) to slow it down. She mentions it in her book.
You're talking about 11 years after she first danced it. When she came back into the show, at 48 years of age, from debilitating rheumatoid arthritis.
That's different.
