There's quite a lively discussion over that that *other* board about DM's chances of getting hired to play a lead in a musical again...apparently she's missed 30+ performances of WT - what do you all think?

I'll be seeing Wonderful Town in August. Does anyone know if Donna will be in that month?

I think the producers should fire her, and move Linda M. up to the starring role. The show is barely hanging on, and the star's absences (which I'm assuming are legot) are hurting the show. I know quite a few friends who have avoided the show because they are tired of playing the will she or won't she game. I'm coming back to N.Y. next month, and while I would like to see Donna Murphy's performance again, I'm not even bothering with buying a ticket.

When does a performer miss too many performances? There are always people who make excuses for performers who miss, but at what point, do the absences become too many? 20? 30? 40?

you guys act like she is out every week! She isn't. Let's be fair that 2 weeks of those performances missed were her being sick during previews. Let's not blow this out of proportion any more than it has been.

I don't think we're blowing it out of proportion at all - every time she's out, people can return their tickets for a refund. That could be extremely costly for a show when someone is out that often.

She's out considerably more than anyone else. 30 performances?? If you had 30 sick days a year on your job, you'd have major problems keeping it, never mind finding the next one.

Her actual absences are hurting the show because they create the perception (rightly or wrongly) that she is "out every week!" This was before Mr. Reidel's column which made it more noticeable. I haven't said how many performances she's missed because I don't keep track, but if the reports online are any indication, she's missed A LOT more than she should be. And that goes back to my question. How many absences constitute too much??

Chenoweth's absences have not hurt WICKED because most people go to see the show whereas a lot of people I know only want to see WT because of Murphy. If you can't depend upon the star to actually show up (and this is the perception), why bother buying a ticket? I know people who refused to buy tickets for MILLIE because they were fed up with trying to determine if Sutton Foster would appear.

But generally you guys seems to have no problem with Chenowith being out. You aren't holding her to the same standards as Donna.

I don't know how much Chenowith has been out, but I do know that generally her absences are announced beforehand, as they're due to scheduling issues. People have the chance to decide if they want to buy the ticket and travel to the city to see her or Laura Bundy. Different situation.

nope--I usher the show. Therefore, I see the difference between the reality of things and the bs that is usually spouted about said things. (I know when the Post is full of crap)

What's the difference? The reality IS that she has missed a large number of shows...I'm friends with a B'way star or two, and if this discussion was about one of them, I'd have to cop to the fact that they WERE missing a lot of shows, no matter how I feel about them personally. You may think she's fabulous, and hey, she IS. No one is disputing that. We're questioning whether someone with her attendance record is hurting her own chances for future starring roles.

But, while you are focused on how much she misses, I SEE how many she is there for. I KNOW (most of the time) WHY she is out. And, I think she is getting crapped on--and it isn't fair.

Another reason she was out a bit ago? To do a pilot. How is it fair that Chenowith can do other shows, but Donna isn't allowed to? Oh that's right--Donna didn't send out her planner in a press release.

If she's out and it's scheduled and announced in advance, so ticket buyers are aware, no one has any problem with that. But I'm getting the impression that most of her absences are not pre-planned/announced. That's when it becomes problematic, and when producers/ticket buyers become wary.

Are we burning Chenoweth at the stake or is it Murphy? My vote goes for Chenoweth.

JRBACTOR, Donna Murphy has had a significant number of absences. When you're selling the point for a show, the perception that you miss a great deal is not going to inspire confidence in ticket buyers. The show is barely hanging on. She created this perception by her absences not Mr. Reidel. He only exacerbated the situation.

I've heard the figure of 30+ missed performances for Donna Murphy in Wonderful Town. So taking that as reasonably accurate, that's a month's worth of missed performances in an eight month run, which is a pretty high number.
