re: Dont Forget Chitty

I think the family market is bottomless (it constitutes the majority of the overall theatregoing audience for Broadway) and can sustain any number of "kid-friendly" entertainments.

No, the problem is just the opposite. The major issue with Broadway is that the audience for serious "adult-oriented" theatre is dwindling to the point that it's become too small to keep nonmusical plays and challenging new non-family-oriented musicals running for very long.

I'm not disagreeing with you, Margo, but the whole phenomenon baffles me. Who are these parents that can afford to spend $100 on a theatre ticket for two or three kids? Why is this market "bottomless"???

I would assume (and I'm just spitballin' here, I don't have any kids of my own) that kids would ask their parents to take them to properties that they are familiar with. THE LION KING and BEAUTY IN THE BEAST are exceptionally familiar to kids, who have grown up watching the readily available Disney videos and DVDs.

CHITTY? Not so much. It's always been a marginal children's classic, and has nearly disappeared from television and video a number of times.

If parents remember it fondly, I can imagine that they would take their kids to relive their own childhood memories. But given the choices (especially throwing MARY POPPINS into the equation), I think that CHITTY would be a last resort sort of thing.

It's families who all go to New York together and want to "have the Broadway experience" without splitting up. There's a reason the first Broadway shows I saw were Cats and Beauty and the Beast.

re: Dont Forget Chitty

I have to say, I have been suprised by the lack of ...hype, for Chitty.
From the kid aspect, out of all the Disney videos my nieces have, Chitty I think has been watched once and that's about it. Maybe it's because they have a hard time with the names.
I what Chitty will provide is ticket availability for families with older kids, who can't get Wicked or Lion King tix. But I think the lack of chatter doesn't bode well.

Well, Broadway is a once a year kind of thing for most families, so they save up all year for those $100 tickets. And once they've seen The Lion King and Beauty and The Beast, they want other "safe" titles, which is why blatantly kid-friendly shows generally do so well (a flop like Seussical is something of a rarity).
