Doonesbury the Musical?

Posted: 12/30/04 at 4:39amI was looking through different shows on IBDB that have played through the years in broadway theatres and I came across this. It played at the Biltmore in 1983. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Is it based on the comic strip? If so I find that really odd. I could be wrong, but I'm guessing it must not have been very good since I've never heard of it.

Posted: 12/30/04 at 6:48amYes, it was based on the comic strip. Score by Elizabeth Swados (Runaways), which had a couple of interesting things in it (and some awful things in it), but it was generally not a very good show. Most famous thing about it was a scenic effect where Uncle Duke bulldozed the set every night. There is a cast album out there on MCA Records, that has not been issued on CD.

I know Gary Beach played Uncle Duke (which you probably knew already, if you were at ibdb), and I have pictures somewhere...hold on.
ETA: Tada! Pictures.

I must admit that I adore DOONESBURY. It's one of my top three cast albums not on CD.
I know that many people loathe Elizabeth Swados, but I think the score is kicky fun, especially "I Can Have It All." (Which, for trivia fans, was performed by Laura Dean -- also known as the girl who throws her dance bag onto the subway tracks instead of committing suicide in the movie FAME. She was also in the workshop of CARRIE).
