Dorian

Here in California, I saw a production of "Dorian" at the NoHo Arts center. This was the first show in a looooong time that almost made me cry. I know the show is still undergoing changes but if it finds an audience once it goes to NY, it has so much potential to be successful. I had no clue Max von Essen was THAT unreal. He was PERFECT in that role and I hope he reprises it once the show continues on its way to broadway. This, as far as I know, is the only musicalized adaptation that works. Go see it!

re: Dorian

I agree about Max von Essen and I also liked Kevin Bailey as his nemesis, but I thought the show had some story-telling problems, especially in the second act. To me this is a show that should have been through composed or at least heavily underscored. The music is wonderful and atmospheric and one wants more of it! Some of the too-long dialgue scenes squandered momentum. That said, it's a show that does have a lot of GREAT moments. And the ending is very powerful.
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

This boy loves him some Max Von Essen! When John Targlia is being interviewed on "On the Boards," Max calls John and hysteria ensues!!!

re: Dorian

It sounds like a Wildhorn musical. If he had done it it would already be D.O.A. even before it opens as far as the critics are concerned

If you’re looking for more information (including pictures) on 'Dorian', check Max’s website. I’m afraid that I could not get to California to see the show, so I can’t share any personal thoughts. But here’s a link to a list of ‘Dorian’ (Exquisite, Marvelously Macabre, Stellar, Deeply Moving) reviews.

Mr. Roxy~ Then I'm glad that the very talented James Mellon, Scott DeTurk and Duane Poole wrote this one and not Wildhorn.
And, woohoo!...most of the critics seem to love it, including a great review from Variety. I've only seen a couple Wildhorn shows, but this one is very different from those...especially musically.

New Kid~ I agree about Max being PERFECT for this role (of course now I have that song going through my head! LOL!) We've been very spoiled having Max out here in CA for the last few months. First Jesus Christ Superstar and now Dorian. But, I do hope that Dorian makes it's way to NY and that Max stays with the show!
