Double-casting in musical theatre

With certain Wicked productions double casting the role of Elphaba and Glinda, are certain roles in musical theatre that should be doubled casted? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Post your thoughts below.

It seems obvious to me that the ideal is a single company with the same people playing the same roles at every performance.

THAT BEING SAID, when roles are too hard on the voice or body, double casting isn't a matter of choice.
