#1Doyle or Swanson as Melchior?
Posted: 11/1/07 at 8:39pmSince groff is gone due to his pilot, has Matt Doyle been performing as Melchior or has it been Jesse Swanson. Either way I am interested in seeing how either one has been faring, if someone has seen it this week feel free to place a review.

Posted: 11/2/07 at 8:57amI saw Matt perform this role in August, when Groff was doing Hair. And, to me, he was a revelation. He was oustanding, both vocally and dramatically. He gave the role a new edge and he really did look like a 15 yr old boy. Props to Matt. The word on Jesse has been mixed. I cannot comment because I haven't seen him in the role.

Saw Jesse last night. The show sounds significantly different with him in it - his voice is just different, of course! He seems to want the last scene in Act 1 to just be done with, which is sorta funny.
Lot of gigglers in the audience last night. Very irritating. The ushers were struggling w/ them all night - texted their way through the whole show. Think it was some sort of school group.

lc, I was at the same show and I agree that it sounds very different with Jesse in as Melchior. I didn't particularly care for his portrayal. His voice sounded pretty in parts but it wasn't consistent, and the wide-eyed look of surprise on his face got a little old as the show progressed.
The idiots who were laughing at inappropriate spots were incredibly annoying. I loved that Gallagher basically called them out on it during his BC/EFA speech. I've seen five shows this week during my visit to the city and I must say that I've never seen such rude audiences. Does no one know how to behave at the theatre anymore?

Posted: 11/3/07 at 5:39pmthanks for all the info. I would love to see Doyle as Melchior, but I doubt I'll get the chance. Either way I hope Matt and Jesse both do great as Melchior, and I wish Jonathan the best of luck on his new pilot.
