DRAMA CLUB ANNOUNCES WICKED GOOD LINEUP OF NEW MUSICALS
DEVELOPING IN MAINE SUMMER RESIDENCIES
New York, NY – Feb 17, 2025 – Drama Club is thrilled to announce the 2025 Drama Club Camp Writer Residencies: an exciting slate of 62 diverse writers working on 32 new musicals who are coming upta camp this summer in Maine.
Drama Club Camp Writer Residencies host writing teams of 4-6 new musicals together as a cohort for a week of writing and community in a 14-bedroom clubhouse nestled on 60 wooded acres with two lakes, miles of nature trails, writing cabins, and a new recording studio. Camp is free to attend and provides writers with everything they need to develop their new musicals - including chef-made meals and a community of supportive artists. Nightly group dinners are followed by sharing sessions that allow artists to hear their work and receive feedback.
“This year’s slate of artists is as talented as they are diverse. They are working on traditional musical theater and experimental work. I couldn’t be more excited to host them at Camp as they push their pieces further,” says Shannon Morrison, the program’s founder and artistic director. Campers in 2025 include multiple Larson Award, Rodgers Award, and Loewe Award winners, former O’Neill NMTC participants, alumni of the Johnny Mercer Grove, and leading academics. Of them, 52% percent identify as female or non-binary, 62% as LGBTQIA+, and 31% are people of color.
“This year’s submissions were off the charts. We had so many applications from all around the world that we added two more cohorts in 2025 to increase capacity by 40%,” says Scott Ihrig, co-founder and executive producer of Drama Club.
“It’s only our second year of Writer Residencies, and I'm astonished at the top-notch talent in this year’s Campers. So many of these voices need to heard, whether in regional theaters, stock and amateur productions, or on Broadway stages. We’re honored to be a part of these writer’s journey. It's going to be a wicked exciting summer,” adds Morrison.

ABOUT DRAMA CLUB:
Drama Club creates brave musicals with LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and emerging artists. We conceive, commission, develop, invest in, and produce new musicals. We also own and run Drama Club Camp - a musical theatre writing retreat in Mount Vernon, Maine that hosts single-show development retreats and free summer residencies for collaborative teams of writers. We are creating a community by expanding opportunities for new musical development. We are always looking for co-conspirators to develop new musicals.
Founded in 2020 by husbands Shannon Morrison (artistic director) and Scott Ihrig (producer), our credits include A Strange Loop (Broadway and London), and we are currently a producer of DRAG: The Musical at New World Stages off-Broadway. We are also developing four musicals from Camp and three commissions: Blind Date - a musical centering the blind aesthetic with a blind creative team; Discovery - a musical about NASA's astronauts journey from the Challenger disaster towards the return-to-flight launch of Discovery; and The Ghost & Mrs. Muir - a musical adaptation of the beloved novel with Grammy-nominated composer Carmel Dean.
