What would the eligibility be for HIlTD for the Drama Desks? Would Mary Louise Parker be eligible for a nomination after already appearing in this role years ago? Would the show be eligible for nominations or not because this production already features MLP previously?
It’s a good question, because it’s rare (but not unheard of) that we see these revivals that are also remounts of the original Off-Broadway production. I went to check the 2016 awards, because Blackbird was a similar situation – but it seems like they didn’t get any nominations. Which is kind of inconclusive, because I’d assume that Michelle Williams would’ve been eligible since she wasn’t in it Off-Broadway. So maybe the Drama desks just didn’t like it?
My guess is that they’d follow similar rules as the Tonys for when revivals replicate earlier staging: it’ll probably be eligible for Best Revival, but David Morse will be ineligible because he won last time. Strangely, Parker wasn’t even nominated when it premiered Off-Broadway, so maybe she’ll be eligible this time? I’m not sure.
