Have you SEEN Applegate? And not on TV. In the actual show.
Gambatese' performance isn't even in the same league.

Mercedes was the only upset. But she has won before and that might be the reason.
I was pretty happy with the nominations this year.

Again, I feel the need to point out my avatar, the delicious Billy Crudup, and his unbelievably odd snub for his performance (which ANCHORS the show) in The Pillowman.
He's brilliant and you like his character right away, and even when you begin to find out things about him you might not like, you're still on his side. Tough to do.
Also, whomever mentioned Caligula's "snub," it's not eligible. It only played through NYMF (which is also where Altar Boyz started) but NYMF is technically an off-off-Broadway series. Altar Boyz was nominated for its current off-Broadway run at Dodger Spaces.

Actually, if there was particular aspect of the Broadway production that was called into question, it was Billy Crudup. Several critics who liked the show overall, had some issues with him.
Variety said Crudup "never quite rises to the occasion of McDonagh's conjurer of tales."
The Star Ledger said "Crudup possesses a light, relatively colorless voice, and he is unable to give sufficient dramatic flair to the eerie tales Katurian relates to others. It's a crucial weakness on the actor's part that unfortunately renders the play less enthralling than it might be."
The Siegels at TheatreMania wrote "Crudup's earnest performance can't match Goldblum's flashy black comic turn. The result is a blunted finale."

Interesting. It's so hard to be the straight man.
Of course you're going to suffer in a production where you have a set of bizarrely comic hitmen/cops after you, giving alternately spooky/hilarious turns, as well as a brother playing a mentally disabled adult (which is always fodder for awards ceremonies - everyone loves it when you play mentally ill).
I think they missed the boat with Crudup, still. He played a real average human surrounded by lunacy and he remained true and, for the most part, normal. That is hard to do given the circumstances of the play and what's swirling around him in terms of the other characters.
***Edit***
oh, and I certainly wouldn't think they'd be all that likely to follow the advice of critics (although most of the DD voters are critics, correct?)...after all, they all but gave Tony-winning love letters to Sara Ramirez.

Year after year, I have problems with the Drama Desk folks mixing Bway with off-Bway shows in their nominations. Why not use terms like "Oustanding" instead of "Best". Awards could then be given to more than one deserving show or actor in each category-- on and off Bway.
