I have just been watching the Drama Desk Awards on PBS, and what did they spend on production costs, $1.14? Nomination sheets that tear when they open them, a tacky onstage band, etc. Even the people who came look like they just grabbed anything in their closet to wear. I can only think they only showed up because it looks impressive to have "Drama Desk Winner" in the ads. Unless people who read the ads know how bad a show it was. Give me the Tonys any day!!!!

Um, Billy Strich was at the keyboards, I believe, and he is anything but tacky.

Okay, but you have to admit the show was terrible. And having the band there made it look like some cabaret. I had it on my DVR but decided after it was over that I wouldn't even save the musical performances.
Well now you know you don't have to watch them next year. Interesting that you watched them all the way through though since it was so awful.
Of course the Tonys are more flashy and elaborate...if each show wanted to chip in a hundreds of thousands to produce the DD's (as it costs for shows to appear on the Tonys) they could do that too, but that is just fiscally unfeasable. Those awards are about theater, period. It doesn't matter how much your show makes or how much capital it takes to run...everyone, Bway, off-Bway, and off-off Bway, is on even ground.
I think of all the performances I would have saved Christine's. The others, not so much. I actually find them fun BECAUSE of their lack of polish. And I don't think anyone takes them too seriously so they tend to be a bit more relaxed. Rather like the Golden Globes are to the Oscars.
Is this the show Corine produced?

Actually, after the first twenty minutes I used the DVR to speed through it and would stop to watch certain awards or performances.
From the posts above, I feel I have stepped on some people's feet. Didn't mean to do that, was just expressing my feeling that it was not well done.

Oh, I don't think anyone was offended. In fact I think everyone for the most part would agree with you.
And Dame, yes, the Core is one of the "producers" which is a polite way of saying "volunteer gofer".
Way to go, Corine.
I produced the parties and they were sensational.
Trump and John's did a wonderful job.

Our local PBS station showed this in the middle of the night last week and i taped it. The show was full of technical glitches. (Why when some presenters were reading nominees did it cut away to a card with another voice-over announcer?) But the numbers were good and (hooray!) Patti and Michael did "A Little priset" which is what I felt that should have done on the Tony Awards.
But yes indeed the show needs a better producer. I was hoping for something more along the lines of the PBS coverages of the first 10 Tony awards from 1997 through 2002.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

frontrowcenter, I agree with you. Those times that PBS did the first hour of the Tonys were often the best produced hour. We got to see a lot more creation of shows, rehearsals, etc.

I liked when Fran announced the winner before the nominees
