I am okay with casting Effie with an unknown (though Patina Miller would indeed be fantastic, give her some padding if needed). However, I'd love to see some Broadway regulars in the other roles, people mentioned on here like Ramona Keller, Anika Noni Rose (as Deena), Sasha Allen, etc. And definitely the likes of Chester Gregory, Daniel Breaker, et al in the male roles. It should be an A-list event.

"The Korean run is part of a bizarre money-saving out of town tryout to prepare Dreamgirls for its triumphant return to...well, New York, anyway."

Wow. Outsourcing has now hit Broadway?

I think Shayna Steele's Effie would be a force to be reckoned with.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Here's a link to Frank Rich's 1981 review of Dreamgirls. It describes the excitement of the original production perfectly.

It was only a matter of time before someone tried it, fbueller. Crushgroove earlier expressed feeling almost offended by the all-Korean cast. Have to say I share the sentiment. It's not about the art or Bennett's vision, it's about the bottom line.

eta: thanks for the link, morosco.

I just don't understand... I thought they were gonna cast it here (with American actors)..take it to Korea, do a run, then bring it back to B'way. I'm just kind of baffled...

LaChanze needs to be in it too.

Sasha Allen needs to have some role in this show. Her voice is so incredible! She's one of my favorite cast members of Hair.

As it has been said on this thread, LaChanze was in the original production, she's way too old for any of the roles. There are plenty of younger black actresses who can play the roles.
