I haven't seen Dreamgirls, I've only listened to the original cast recording and seen clips of the show, and to me it doesn't seem like Curtis truly loves Deena. He only becomes interested in her after she replaces Effie as lead singer and his reason for loving her is "you are my dream"? If anyone whose seen the show has an opinion on this, please tell me!

He took Deena out of the back line and made her a star. I think it's a Pygmallion situation - he's in love with his creation.
