Dreamgirls recordings#0
Posted: 2/23/05 at 1:55amI'm planning to go and get the recording either this weekend or next. Which recording should I get the OBC or the Concert? thanks for your help in advance
re: Dreamgirls recordings#1
Posted: 2/23/05 at 1:56amgeneral consensus is the obc, but the concert has all the material. (and audra)
re: Dreamgirls recordings#2
Posted: 2/23/05 at 2:48amConcert!!!! It's completely thrilling from start to finish. And Lillias + Audra = perfection.

I also really love the Concert Recording. I think this cast is to die for and I wish I could have seen them live.
If, after you listen to the concert recording, you love it and want to hear more, then get the OBC recording.

Posted: 2/23/05 at 9:02amI'd still say stick with the original recording. As nice as it is to have all of the material in the concert version and as talented as the three leading ladies are, each seems to be having trouble with the material in different ways.

Posted: 2/23/05 at 9:05amConcert!!! 4 reasons: Audra, Norm, Darius and Lilias.
re: Dreamgirls recordings#7
Posted: 2/23/05 at 9:09amI had the original for years and never played it. I needed to hear the concert to put the songs in context, so yes, I'd say get both.
re: Dreamgirls recordings#8
Posted: 2/23/05 at 9:14amBoth. While the concert has the whole show (which is great), White's version of 'And I'm Telling You, I'm Not Going' is very, very bad. NO flow and intensity, which is featured on the OBC with Jennifer Holliday.

Posted: 2/23/05 at 10:32amBoth are pretty amazing....But I think if you can only have one Get the Concert-- it makes the show SO much easier to follow and those wonderful songs are so much better when they are in context.

I have both and I prefer the OBCR. While I am pleased to have the entire show in the concert recording, I was really disappointed with it. Heather Headley's performance of It Ain't No Party is terrible.
Whoever is playing Lorelle has got to be able to bring it like Loretta Divine or just forget about it. Too bad there isn't a recording of Ramona Keller doing. I heard she was out of this world and stole the show.

Depends on your needs. If you just want a CD of the key songs, the original Broadway cast Cd will suffice. But it isn't very theatrical, you get no sense of the story from it and the album plays like a pop song recital.
The Concert recording has the whole show and comes across with much more theatricality. If you want the show re-created, this is the one to track down.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Tom, Ramona was indeed out of this world, she almost stole the show from Ms.Holliday
Oh, and you should get both
You won't regret it

Posted: 2/23/05 at 2:05pmBoth. They are the perfect combo when you need a Dreamgirls fix. Must have Jennifer, but Norm, Billy, Audra,Lilias, and Darius add that extra bit for me.
