His "Gesthemane" is by far my favorite. Thanks for the link...too bad about those orchestrations...

this show won't close again for many many years.
running costs are so cheap (somewhere in the 450,000 range) and even in their worst weeks (73%) they never went under running costs.
welcome back miz.

I'm not really feeling the beard. It's a little pubeish for my tastes.
Did anyone mention him carrying Adam? Lol. That's all I really want to know about.

Posted: 7/25/07 at 9:48pmHe had no problem at all carrying Adam. He did put him down during the sewer confrontation, but I think that had more to do with not straining himself to sing than anything else. He even picked up Lea, in his arms like how he carries Adam, and handed her over to the "guards" at the end of the Fantine's Arrest scene.

Honestly? I wasn't impressed.
But to be fair, it wasn't just Drew. He was actually one of the brighter points. The orchestra sounded canned. The voices were sometimes drowned out even by that. And I'm sorry, big Cosette sounds like a flat billy goat on helium. I've never in my life walked out at intermission on a show before, but I did tonight.
And I hated doing it. This was MY show when I was in high school. I listened to it all the time and dreamed of playing Eponine. I knew everything there was to know about it. Because it meant so much to me, I'd purposely stayed away from this revival. Until tonight.
I wish I'd listened to that instinct.

Once he walked out, every single person in in the Broadhurst was on their feet cheering. I really reccomend seeing him. And seriously, his Bring Him Home was worth the ticket price alone.

^ Sadly I couldn't make it that far.
I should have left this show in my memory from its original run.
Act I ruined it for me.

I saw the show tonight (Wednesday). Bring Him Home was fantastic. But while I've said in the past that Lea's performance alone or Alex's alone is worth the price of admission, I don't feel that about Drew yet.
Drew is thinner and younger looking than Alex [I know he's actually four years older]. Although he did carry Adam (and Lea at "Take her to the hospital"), it was scary from my vantage point. He awkwardly crunched him down through the manhole into the sewer, and it appeared that Adam was at least starting to slip off as they progressed around the sewer.
My big complaint is that the wig is too long. It hides Drew's (beautiful) face. (Even if it is the same length as Alex's was, keep in mind that Drew's face is much thinner.) I could see no expressions unless he was facing directly towards me. When the hair became more (fake looking) grey, it still buried his face. Only in the finale did it not hide him.
Also, he didn't seem especially fatherly towards Cosette.
The standing O was nice but not really spontaneous or overwhelmingly enthusiastic.
p.s. I went tonight because a friend couldn't use his tickets. I still have tickets for next week, and my original plan was that Drew would have some time to get more comfortable. I still feel that he'll get much much better.
pps: The three weeks of rehearsal are over. Keep the beard, but please get a haircut.

'He did put him down during the sewer confrontation...'
Mmmhmm. That's exactly what I thought he was going to do. And is it just me, or does it look like he's lost weight? I was expecting him to be bulkier with all that speculated weight training that I was picturing him doing in my mind, lol.
I'm not at all surprised that a lot of people (even his fans) are saying that they were a little underwhelmed with his performance. From what I've noticed in the past, it always takes him a while to get good and comfy in a role. And his natural diction is so unique and special, but I think he really needs to adjust it like he did for Javert because it totally doesn't fit Valjean at all. Whatever though, I know if anyone goes back in a couple weeks it will be a totally different performance from him.
My friend that saw him yesterday said that it looked like he kept chewing on his wig and spitting it out. I think they all need to be trimmed, especially since Drew has sort of a *small* head and it doesn't really look proportionate.

Posted: 7/26/07 at 3:28pmSadly revolutionary, for me it wasn't just him. As I said he was one of the better points...just not good enough for me to sit through everyone else and ruin what i had left of amazing memories of the show. It was the whole production.

I think it's funny that a handful of Drewbies are all sh*tting themselves over Javert popping up over the top of the barricade when that's hardly nonstandard blocking...

Posted: 7/30/07 at 2:20pmWhat's the appeal of Drew Sarich? I never understood... sure, he's young, cute and fairly talented, but that still doesn't explain the undying devotion so many "Drewbies" give him.

It's that he does strange shows* that attract strange people. In large numbers.
* not including Les Miz

Posted: 7/30/07 at 4:22pmWow. Okay, I saw the show Saturday night and it blew me out of the water. The entire cast is dynamite and totally born to play those specific parts. Jean Valjean was fierce, Eponine broke my heart, Javert is a badass, Marius is gorgeous and a fantastic actor. I finally got to see Lea Salonga live, and she tore it up. Ignore the cliche of seeing Les Mis and buy your tickets today. It's fantastic.
