Drunken City

Saw the play Drunken City at Playwrights Horizons tonight and really really enjoyed it.

Has anyone seen it yet?

(P.S. Searching "drunken" on the BWW boards pulls up a funny list of posts...)

Yeah it's pretty good show. I would recomend checking it out.

How was Barrett Foa?

He's been conspicuously not working for a while.
Was he good in a straight play?

Foa was great; the whole cast was. I think the play itself is AMAZING. I will definitely be looking into more Adam Bock stuff.

And Barrett Foa was on Broadway in Spelling Bee until less than a year ago. Since then, he's done Lady in Question, that Charles Busch play, I think at the Bay Street Theatre, and Pirates! at Papermill Playhouse... And I've seen him in at least a handful of concerts and workshops. So... I don't think that means "not working". He hasn't technically been on Broadway since late spring- ish 2007? If that's what you mean?

I've heard great things. Bock is a very promising playwright.

I utterly despise Barrett Foa, but I'm seeing this next weekend. I was under the impression that it was just going to be fluff. Hope not.

I had only heard about Pirates, plus some Bernard Shaw reading.

I meant that he'd sort of been out of the major spotlight.

I apologize for my ignorance.

Hopefully we'll see him somewhere soon, he's a talented cat.

No no, scaryclowns, I did not mean to antagonize you! I like your posts and your avatar especially, and I don't think you're ignorant in the slightest.

I guess he HAS technically been a little bit out of the New York spotlight since he hasn't been on the Bway since April or May of last year, but that's really not that long. I admire actors like Foa who try to do a lot of interesting projects regionally in between New York roles. (Another is Hunter Foster... when I saw him in Kiss of the Spiderwoman at Signature last week, I thought about how he's done at least a half a dozen regional productions in the past year- Party Come Here, Full Monty...)

But back on topic... I am excited to see what critics think of Drunken City. I didn't think it was fluff at all.

I really want to see this. I love Adam Bock, and I think the premise of this play sounds really fascinating.

Really wish I could see this, but timing doesn't look like its going to work out.

I think I'll probably end up reading it.
I have some Adam Bock reading to do- THE RECEPTIONIST, THE THUGS, and DRUNKEN CITY are all on my list.

He's got a definite future.

I saw Drunken City at the Kitchen Theatre in Ithaca, NY four or five years ago with the amazing Karl Gregory in the cast. I thought it was wonderful and hilarious show. I'm glad to see that it's finally getting a viewing in New York City!

saw the second preview...

if you liked Swimming in the Shallows you'll like this. Very much in the same vain. Foa is fine, nothing worth writing about but by no means bad or even mediocre. He's just sort of the gay best friend. I think that the play was really fascinating and though I found it to be a bit flawed at times, it's still very much worth seeing. Loved the Opening. Great performances from the woman who played the chick getting married (yeah names aren't my thing) and the latin actor. Play has some great lines that had me in a hoot and I found myself suprisingly moved by a lot twoards the end. Nice direction from Trip Cullman and overall a really enjoyable, hilarious and thought provoking evening.

Adam Bock's work is incredible and it's really awesome seeing him explode in NYC (following The Receptionist). For a good time, he was a notable in San Francisco, and often stretched his legs at the Encore Theatre, a small black-box in Potrero Hill.

The Drunken City is scribbled into my To-See List... only hope I can finagle some tickets soon.

I think I just found some $15 tickets. Excellent.

Swimming in the Shallows is one of my favorite plays. I don't want to go in with too high expectations, but, we'll see. I really like him.
