Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't this first produced decades ago & it closed before getting much of anywhere. The article did not mention this

You are correct!
The musical was first presented in Philadelphia as part of the 1987 American Music Theatre Festival, but did not continue on to Broadway.

Also, if you search around the Playbill site they have a video of one of the songs from this production.

The Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (at Lincon Center) has a tape of that production. Lonny Price played Duddy.

It got good reviews last night and has extended.
Hopefully we'll see it in NY soon.
