Because she's not a producer and it's not her job to be one.
I'm just saying that if she is THAT unhappy about the state of theatre why DOESN'T she produce. Set an example. She obviously has the money, so why do another revival of K&I when Marie Osmaond has already done the definitive?
Her comments proclaim how she feels, but can you tell if she is THAT unhappy?
I would rather perform in a show, than no show at all. She is a performer, not a producer.
What she said might have some truth in it, but it leaves out a lot of facts, like how much it costs to produce and run a show these days. How long it takes to recoup. And most producers don't have just one show running for 10 years on Broadway. They have other shows that come in and out during that time as well - indeed, using that money to produce other shows. She shouldn't speak without knowing what she's talking about. As a celebrity and someone associated with theater, people outside the theater community will take what she says as coming from someone knowledgable.

"Because she's not a producer and it's not her job to be one."
Precisely! Her job is to talk about acting, not what producers choose to stage.
So, now she can't have an opinion. Well then none of you can either unless YOU are a producer. Such fantastic logic as always.
The problem with her opinions is that people will listen to them and take them as fact because she is a celebrity.

Gothampc, Duncan speaks not just as an actress but as someone who loves the theater and the musical form especially, which entitles her to protest the shabby state of Broadway just like anyone else. Would that there were more brave souls like her.
Brave AND educated. She made inaccurate statements. To the PRESS. I don't find that admirable. If you're going to take a stand, make sure you know what you're standing up for. And against.

Oh, please,Rathnait. Duncan has been an entertainment professional for nigh unto 40 years--she is, no doubt, fully aware of its business operations and its high risk as well. But the ugly fact is the day of the gentleman producer with a passion is gone with the wind. What we have now are the "suits" and the corporations who, except in the very rare instance, care and know nothing about theater and only have their eye on the bottom line. That's why Broadway has become theme parks, children's theatre, revivals and shows for morons. The sad part of Duncan's tirade is that it's a cliche at this point but nonetheless, when the moral fiber of a community begins to disintegrate (and what is more moral than theatre??), the poets have to stand up.
Someone "fully aware" of the business would realize that the comments about keeping shows on for 10 years just to "make money" and as she claims, NOT to produce other shows, are completely coming out of her - excuse me, out of nowhere.

Like there aren't producers who have made a killing on one show and never produce another.
R-I-G-H-H-H-H-H-T.
That is pretty rare. She spoke as if that is the ONLY kind of producer. Just not true.

I'm with Rait on this one: if she's so concerned about the dearth of Broadway, let her put her money where her mouth is and produce something. After all, it's not like you need brains to be a producer, right? :)
And maybe she can do something about these hundred-dollar tickets. After all, those are just a money grab, right?
For those who are so inclined, here is my recent review (posted on 6/25/04 right here on broadwayworld.com) of The King and I starring Sandy Duncan:

"Oh, SANDY Duncan. I thought it was Duncan Nutter!"
Haha! So did I.
I'm not saying she needs to produce something - just that she needs to educate herself before she goes shooting her mouth off to the press.
