I am singing "My brother lived in San Francisco" for an upcoming audition and was wondering if anyone had any information on the background of this song? I know it is sung by a "living" character and the show is basically a a collection of poems and monologues (relating to victims or friends/family of victims to AIDS) I have searched the internet and all i can find is something about two lovers who wanted to be buried together and how one of their sisters was a lawyer and worked to make that happen. I don't see how this fits in with the song that much though. Any information is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

I'm playing this part here at school now.... she is singing about those 2 lovers. Bud is her brother, and Joe was his lover / her best friend.

I am currently producing a production in Dallas for World AIDS Day. I don't think that Joe and Bud are necessarily lovers, though I suppose they could be.

miss, bud's monologue about wanting to be buried with his lover precedes Judith's song, "My Brother Lived..." Bud is her brother, and he does talk about his sister the lawyer, Judith. Immediately following the song, her best friend from college, Joe, delivers his monologue.

They've been played as lovers in 3 different productions I know of... but it can be done any way, really.

I'm MDing a production right now in which they are lovers.

I've also played Bud - both him and Joe were lovers.

Interesting ... is there something textually that I am missing that indicates that they are? Also, how does that manifest itself in the blcoking to indicate that they are lovers? Or are the actors simply using that subtext?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
