re: EVITA movie

I love the movie but I haven't seen the show. I actually saw EVITA before I was a major fan of musicals. It played a part in my obsession.

re: EVITA movie

patti was much more thrilling than madonna...they dumbed down the score for her. patti was great (at least on the OCR), almost scary. i listened to it many times over the summer, driving from San Fran to San Diego. it gave me chills.

re: EVITA movie

I was doing Evita in a small professional theatre when the movie came out, and I remember being really upset about the altering of "Another Suitcase in another hall." I understand that its Madonna, but was it really necessary to cut the only other female character in the show? Poor Andrea Corr, who is phenomenal by the way, gets three lines of the darn song. Plus, it doesn't make sense for Eva to sing it. I agree with Yankeefan that the score was dumbed down for her. Oh well, at least Antonio Banderas rocked:)
There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

re: EVITA movie

Even though some of the score may have been simplified for Madonna, it didn't take away from the integrity of the show at all. I really thought this movie was VERY well done and Madonna deserved the Golden Globe she won without a doubt.

re: EVITA movie

I liked it. Perhaps not as brilliant as the Prince staging but it worked well.

Andrea corr was in it?? I didn't mind giving Suitcase to Eva just because I think the tiny bit part of the Mistress woulda lost all focus and interest in a movie--works better on stage.

The score was barelu *dumbed down* though. Madonna proved that se can only act when she's singing and using music--and so did a fine job. I liked the updated orchestrations too--some returning to the rockier concept version.

Funny at the time I thought it was sucha long wait from stage to screen (17 years?) but Phantom has been at least as long...

The film didn't do great--and was expensive I believe but it wasn't a flop--it made about 60 mill domestically and a lot more internationally.

re: EVITA movie

I htink EVITA is the best movie musical ever made. I think the fact that Alan Parker did it as a music video like he did with PINK FLOYD: THE WALL was a groundbreaking concept. As far as I am aware, it was also the first movie musical of the 90s and I htink IT is more what brought the genre back. I don't care what anyone thought of Madonna's acting because she actually sang the music with a rock voice as did Antonio Banderas contrary to musical theatre singers like LuPone and Patinkin who just sang it through their noses. I think as far as art direction and cinematography the movie had everything "The English Patient" had. I think the orcestrations and the voices make it the definitive version of the score. It was the most contemporary and alive that music had ever sounded.

re: EVITA movie

the last time i saw it was in the theaters and i don't remember much about it except that i thought it was ok. Maybe i should rent it again. then i will post more of my thoughts.
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

re: EVITA movie

They were both different. Seeing the show was a wonderful experience. Well Staged and sung. The movie actually took us there, which made it an equally enjoyable experience. Madonna had her moments, but I found her Eva to be a little weak at times - (Especially the "Screw the middle classes!" That is said out of anger. But Madonna said it more as a pity plea) Hate the new song for the movie "You Must Love Me". It wasn't accurate to the truth. Juan actually stayed away from her while she was dying because he couldn't stand her "death" smell.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
