Posted: 9/1/08 at 12:14pmI have recently been getting into the London revival recording of this show and do want to see the movie of this. It would be great to see it in theatres as oppose to DVD. But, I am not sure If I can sit through a sing along version of it. I don't know how I feel about being in a theatre full of people who can't sing, singing along during the entire movie.

EVITA didn't start the recent resurgence of movie musicals. That honor goes to Baz Luhrmann's MOULIN ROUGE. EVITA failed at the box office. The film cost $55 mill to make. In the US it took in a paltry $50 mill at the box office. Internationally it made a total of $91 mill for a grand total of $141 mill.
Maybe Patti LuPone can attend and drown out Madge's incredibly weak vocal performance in this turkey.

Baz Luhrman said himself he was moved by the filmwork of alan Parker in EVITA to make something just as sweeping...
Evita was the first movie musical in a long time to start that spark..it was a huge risk and it wasn't too far off from Moulin ROuge's totals at all.
Moulin Rouge grossed 57 million domestically and 120 foreign
with a total of 177 million worldwide
EVITA grossed 50 million domestically and 91 million foreign
with a total of 141 million worldwide.
I wouldn't consider any of them a phenomenal success but they broke molds at the time and EVITA started it in 1996 winning
the best original song oscar (you must love me)
and 3 Golden Globes including:
Best Motion Picture
best Original Song
and Best Actress for Madonna in the role of Eva.
And of course,..you can't compare Patti's theater voice with Madonna's pop voice..
but I have often spoken to people who always complained about Patti's repetitive yelling and scolding during Evita's performance...as opposed to giving the role of Eva..a softer side...which Madonna did very gracefully and very fittingly in the way this film was done. SHe did a fine side..and finally,...Eva wasn't screaming and no other person in the pop world at the time could've done it better...the lives of Eva and Madonna are uncannily similar in some ways...and it made it just the more enjoyable to watch.....Madonna has always been interesting to watch in music video form...she had mastered that craft early on in her career..so to see her on the widescreen in a full length movie musical was a great opportunity and a perfect marriage.

Posted: 9/2/08 at 4:07amI have to agree with taboo. I too read the interview with Luhrman say Evita was the reason he wanted to direct a musical AND the reason the studio gave him backing. I understand that broadway and theatre kids want to bash Madonna but she did a remarkable acting job in this film and the fact her singing was not Patti did not even matter because her passion was 100 % there. Eva needed to be played by a big star and Madonna was the biggest. I don't think I will ever be understand what peoples problem with Madonna was. Also to say it failed at the box office though it made almost 3 times it's production budget worldwide just really does not make sense does it.....?

I wouldn't say EVITA started it all, especially since it premiered a good 5 years before MOULIN ROUGE. However, I do think it's a neat film with too many imperfections to make it a strong movie, but with enough attributes to make it entertaining and a fun watch.
Patti LuPone's performance or voice would have never worked for the role on film. And while I wish that Meryl Streep had gotten her way and played the role, Madonna does her best acting job of her career. She actually connects to the role, understands Eva and turns her into a fully-fledged woman despite the piece's inherent desire to portray Eva as a monster.
Antonio Banderas couldn't be more perfect as Che, btw. He is simply wonderful and how I wish he had been able to show off his musical talents once again in the NINE film.
The problem is Alan Parker's terrible direction and conceit. This is one musical that had top notch acting work, but was brought down by the director's inability to really adapt the stage work for film. Still, it's a MILLION times better than that awful PHANTOM OF THE OPERA movie.

Well said, ray-andallthatjazz86
I was shocked at first when I heard Madonna was doing it, but after I saw it... I was blown away.
Antonio was a wonderful, perfect as Che. Mandy is still THE ultimate Che, but Antonio was amazing.
This would be fun actually
