Something about Bandares' singing voice reminds me of Jimmy Durante.
I saw a production of Evita a couple of years ago at a little theater company on the Jersey shore. The actor who played Che was INCREDIBLE. He was the most entertaining and impressive of all the leads. While I do like Mandy's voice on the OBCR, this guy has to be my favorite. I wish I could remember his name...meh, I'll go dig up the playbill later.
That's like asking do you like ice creme or candy bars... two very diffrent things, but both satisfy a sweet tooth. Personally, I liked Mandy much better, but thats vocally, seeing as I was not alive to see him perform it.
Mandy live was unequaled in passion in the role. Antonio due to the style of the film was more controlled almost intellectual. I do like 'tonio's singing but prefered him live in "Nine">
I like Antonio Banderas' Latin touch to Che, but Mandy Patinkin sounds more cynical towards Eva and he has an amazing voice. I like Banderas a lot better in Nine, I thought he was great on that recording.
Antonio Banderas is too laid back for Che. I think Mandy Patinkin's interpretation of Che is much more intesne, which I enjoy more.
I actually like COlm Wilkinson best...
but of the two choices, I definitely prefer Mandy.
Didn't they have to alter the music for Banderas - like in "And the Money Kept Rolling In" and "Goodnight and Thank You" to accomodate a limited range?
Not a fair question ;-D I love them both!
Well, it's not a fair question because (again, I'll repeat) they're not the same character.
Mandy was playing Che Guevara, a militant rebel. So, of course his performance was more "angry," "passionate," "militant," etc.
Antonio's Che (not Guevara) was a cypher. He was able to be everyone and anyone in the film. Sometimes angry, sometimes wry, comical, romantic, etc. Not always with a clenched, raised, angry fist, etc.
Not a fair comparison, as far as interpretations of the character... when you're talking about two different "roles."
