Edward Scissorhands

I saw the ballet years ago in Philly. I remember that the music pre-recorded and tinny, but liked it other than that. Caroline Thompson, who had written the screenplay, worked on the story for the stage version. There were some big differences. Edward had been a real boy who was struck by lighting, I think playing with hedge clippers. Out of despair, The Inventor was trying to re-create him. At the end of the ballet, I believe Edward (the "robot"--if that is the right term) dies. They did a nice job of portraying all of the families and their personalities, and used a lot of the music from the film.

Other than that, my memory is pretty fuzzy...

Saw it at BAM a couple years back. Meh. Some changes to the story, and a nice little pas de deux between Edward and the heroine, but it wimps out at the end, making some changes to the story.

Skip it. Unless you're a total Matthew Bourne fan, of course.

I know it was professionally filmed and is floating around the nets.

Thanks for your thoughts, Scarywarhol! This was one of my favorite films growing up, so seeing this come to life onstage would've been a great experience for me. I'm led to believe the reception was mixed, but I still would've liked to have seen it.

You still may se a stage version, since it is apparently on Fox's list of movies-to-musicalize.

I was actually just telling my friend today that if done right this could make a really good musical. Here's hoping!

I saw this and thought both Bourne's work and the music (only memorable when it sampled Danny Elfman's score) were mediocre. It came off bland and generic, which is disappointing with material as distinctive as EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. Some nice visuals, but overall not very much to recommend it. I like Bourne but I've seen him do much better elsewhere.
