Elaine Stritch (or determination pays off)

I finally got to see Elaine Strtich at Cafe Carlyle last Thursday night and I'm happy to report that Ms. Stritch is in top form...

The show started at 8:45pm, a few of the songs she performed were "I Think I Like You", "Why Him?" and "It Amazes Me". She spoke a lot throughout the show, one of my favorite moments was when Ms. Stritch decided to recount some of the experiences she'd had with men over the years, pulled out a notebook and started telling stories of their relationship or lack thereof, tearing off one sheet of paper and throwing it on the ground after each account. IMO the most amusing of all was Frank Sinatra.

She also talked about the time she met President Bush and the First Lady and told him she knew that he had a problem with alcohol in the past, that she did as well and that she knew how difficult it was. They were both very touched, especially the First Lady. It was a very emotional story. The entire evening was a delight...if you have reservations, you have a great evening to look forward to, if not, then hope that the Carlyle extends her run....

On a personal note, I went to see the show with my mom. I made the reservations months ago because my mother adores Ms. Stritch. Unfortunately, on Monday, she got called to California on business and absolutely had to leave Tuesday night to be there Wednesday. She tried to call the Carlyle to book another reservation and let me go with a friend on Thursday but she found they were sold out for the entire run. However, she was determined to see this show so she took the red eye from Newark (NJ) Tuesday night, arrived the next morning took care of all the work issues, hopped on the red eye back home, arrived at 6:50am, went to work and then headed over to The Carlyle to meet me.

When she told me of this crazy plan on Tuesday, while I was at work, I decided to write Ms. Stritch a short note telling her this whole story and to also thank you for booking the show in the first place because it has been almost a year since my mom and I had gone out to see a show together. So after the show on Thursday lots of people were stopping to talk to her so I waited.

While I was waiting, I started talking to her assistant because we were equally disgusted that people were going up to Ms. Stritch while she was testing her blood (she has diabetes) and changing (I was in shock). Her assistant told me that she could "be sitting on the can" and people would still come up and ask for an autograph or just start talking to her. Then she asked my name and when I told her she said something to he effect of "oh! you're the girl who wrote her that lovely letter! where's your mother?") then I sad something to the effect of "Oh, I guess she got it then?" ( I was VERY surprised since I just sent it via express mail to the hotel with her name on it). So after another minute she goes over to Ms. Stritch and brought her over to me and introduced me. It was then that Ms. Stritch asked where my mother was and told me to bring her over. We all talked for awhile and I had caught one of the papers she threw during the show so she signed it for my mom. It was so wonderful and it made my mom so so happy. Anyway just wanted to share.....
