The founder of LaMaMa, and birthmother of a creative side of New York City that will live forever, Ellen Stewart passed this morning at 91 years young.
One of the pioneers in the off-off-Broadway movement. She is gone but her legacy will live on.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
How sad that a thread talking about the life of one of the true GREATS in theatre has so little attention.
I feel so fortunate to have worked with her. I was an intern at La Mama and worked directly with her. Of course this was a long time ago , and she was considered one of the greats even then. Her views towards theatre was enlightening. She performed miracles and created amazing theatre.
Could you imagine what she would have done with one tenth the money thats now being spent on one CRAPPY show called Spiderman?
