Elton John wrote excellent music for The Lion King, won best score for Aida, and wrote Billy Eliott which some people think is the best English musical ever. So what is wrong with the score from Lestat?

Nothing is "wrong" with the score of LESTAT. The music is/was wonderful...

I loved the score to Lestat! It was one of those things that made the show so beautiful. I still have this unofficial cast recording playing over and over in my mind.

Elton John writes fantastic pop music. You never forget you are listening to an Elton John song. The big problems with Lestat was with the books, lyrics and direction. There may have been too many ballads, I doubt he had much say in any of that. He is very hands-off. I really hope Lestat gets an OBC, Tarzan did.

I didn't get to see Lestat and I haven't really even heard any of the music. However, Elton John has written some incredible music - I just recently discovered how great a score Billy Elliot is - and I hope there is a cast album so I can get to hear Lestat!

The funny thing with Elton though is he's written some of the best pop songs of the last 40 years - but if you go to his albums he has some REAL clunkers.

I agree he has great music, just wondering why Lestat flopped.

maybe poor marketing? bad word-of-mouth? (<- more likely) I have no clue...

The Score was great. The acting was also superb. But the book and lyrics were majorly flawed and needed too much work to poissibly fix without starting over. There are numerous threads about this, but there sort of old and may be hard to find.

Sorry but it was not great. It was dreadful. There was one good song ("I Want More"). The rest was dreadful. It flopped because Sir Elton phoned in the score and did not participate in the San Francisco tryout. By the time the show got to NY, it was too late to save it. Google "Lestat reviews" and you will find that the critics did not care for the show or the music (and that is putting it mildly).
