lovely review, my darlings.
and just to put one more nail into emcee's little fangirl coffin, she thought sondheim wrote JCS. *shakes head*

Posted: 1/17/05 at 10:01amoh, it's true. ask TGIF. we were watching an old video of TGIF's sister in JCS, and TGIF asked who wrote it. emcee said that she thought it was sondheim. i was like NO WAY, it's ALW. and she wouldn't believe me and had to look it up. i kid you not!

Well. Clearly we should hold some extracurricular discussions on the Adam thread
.
I'd love a cast recording of this production, but I don't think it's happening. Oh well.
They did it with the recent cast of Assassin, is it not possible to have it also happen for Pacific Overtures? I'm missing this, so I was hoping there would at least be a recording.

Posted: 1/17/05 at 12:03pmI'm trying not to get my hopes up about PSClassics possibly recording it, because the reviews weren't great, it's not very popular, and there are already quite a few recordings of the show.

Posted: 1/17/05 at 12:10pmOh, and it wasn't JCS, it was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (even though they're both written by the same people). Granted, I did just wake up, but Joseph.... sounds NOTHING like Sondheim. I can't remember saying that. I know I was sitting in my chair, wracking my brain for who wrote Evita (leave me alone, I was exhausted)... grrr. I don't know. It's all of your responsibilities to teach me!

I haven't posted a review of PO yet because I've been insanely busy - but I was able to see it last Tuesday night. I will say that I loved the show and most of the direction. The lighting design was also gorgeous. I have already been a fan of the show for years so my opinion is a much more experienced one- whatever that means. I thought B.D. Wong was much better than he was given credit for. Maybe a bit miscast - but only in comparison to the staunch and ultra-conservative approach that Mako took. My biggest complaint would have to be "Please, Hello". I had trouble understanding the words, and it is SO crucial in the number - the audience must hear each lyric. Diction also posed a problem in "Someone In A Tree". The Warrior (man who heard everything) had had very tough time getting his words out, and it was too low for him vocally.
Gotta run, but I must say I really love that this show was finally revived on Broadway. People on here have seen my posts concerning critics or viewers and their comments as to why this show is even a musical. I will not respond to it in depth, but I will say it remains one of my favorite musicals of all time. There are so many reasons this show can be personal to Americans - even though we have a hard time understanding its personal affect on us.
