I agree that if they include the voicemail with Mimi's mother leaving her a message in Spanish (which I don't think they are); that Mimi should be portrayed as Hispanic, but I don't think the actress necessarily needs to be Hispanic, as long as the character is portrayed as such (I hope that makes sense)

In defense of EW, they do care about theater. What other movie/entertainment mag even includes theater, however rarely. The editor is Tony Kushner's lover, so there has to be some connection....personally, I totally agreed with the article, these people are in their mid thirties---waaaaay too old to play these parts. Sorry, Rent-heads.

Stupid EW thinks they are amazing, and what they say goes. Well... not when it comes to theater. they don't even know what they are talking about. If anyone else had been in RENT, besides the ones that deserved it... i would have been UBER-PISSED... and I'm sure everyone else would have been too.

Well... good riddance to their magazine. I mean think about it. These are the ones that claim people like Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson can sing anyway.

No one thinks Hilary Duff can sing.
No one.

As for Jessica Simpson, she can sing well when it's not live. (A bit suspicious...)

I see your point though.

#54the age issue

I've given the age issue a bit more thought after studying some of the most recent pictures of Menzel, Pascal and Rapp. My conclusion is that ultimately, hardly anyone will care besides those of us who have been studying how their appearances have changed over the last eight years. Granted there will be a stark contrast between the youthful appearances of the stage company and those of some of the film's stars, but by no means will they be implausible as "young Bohemians" to the average spectator. Liam Neeson and Laura Linney are playing college-age students AND senior citizens in "Kinsey" this fall, and they're receiving rave reviews for their performances.

Sorry but she even speaks about it during Out Tonight, I cannot imagine a non latino playing Mimi on the big screen, but thats all cool now that Rosario Dawson has been cast as Mimi (big sigh of relief)

Evelyn, I was just thinking the same thing. The average moviegoer doesn't know much about Rent, and probably nothing about the original cast, and will not be thinking about the characters in terms of exactly what their ages should be. If their apparent ages (whatever they are) work with the story, there won't be a problem.

Edit: I should amend that to say that the average moviegoer doesn't know much about the original cast as they appeared in rent - obviously some of them are quite well known. Updated On: 11/9/04 at 12:21 AM
