To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Baz Luhrmann's Oscar-winning ''Moulin Rouge!'' (2001), Entertainment Weekly dishes on the creation of Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor's mammoth ''Elephant Love'' mashup/medley. The article also follows how this mega-medley was revised and reimagined for Karen Olivo and Aaron Tveit for the multi-Tony-nominated musical.
At the end of the article, there's a link to another ''Moulin Rouge!'' story that included some casting trivia that was news to me: Ewan, of course, played Christian in the film, and he won the part over Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Losing that role led to a friendship between Heath and Jake, who, a few years later, would co-star in the Oscar-winning ''Brokeback Mountain.''
