Ok, so I was flipping through Theatre World 1976-1977, cause I like looking at production photos, and was caught really off guard to see three touring productions of Eqqus. Why were there three companies? Were any a sit down in like Chicago or LA that got listed as tours?
Not uncommon at the time. Usually one tour for longer engagements in big cities and two smaller tours for 1 and 2 week runs in smaller towns. A show like EQUUS witha small cast and unit set would be relatively easy and inexpensive to tour.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

And it was a phenomenon. One of those times where a "Straight Play" got as much attention as a Musical does.
