Estelle Parsons as Mrs. Lovett?

The Ledger - October 24, 1979
...when Angela Lansbury departs "Sweeney Todd" next March, she will not be replaced by Estelle Parsons or any other of the actresses who seemed anxious to take over the plum role of the piemaker, but by Dorothy Loudon.

re: Estelle Parsons as Mrs. Lovett?

Estelle Parsons would have been a divine Lovett. I think Dorothy Loudon was at the time a surprise choice for the role, based partly on her previous work but also because after she'd won the Tony for ANNIE and been nominated for BALLROOM the past two years running, and it was somewhat unexpected for her to step in to something as a replacement.

Wow, I love Parsons' singing voice and I thought she was brilliant in AUGUST: OC, that would have been a real joy to witness. I do wonder who the other actresses were.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I think June Havoc played it at one point as well.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Loudon was really great as well; it was a surprise to see "Worst Pies" done entirely in chest voice.
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."

After seeing her BRILLIANT performance last night in Osage; I would have loved to see her take on Mrs. Lovette.

She's perfection!
