...when Angela Lansbury departs "Sweeney Todd" next March, she will not be replaced by Estelle Parsons or any other of the actresses who seemed anxious to take over the plum role of the piemaker, but by Dorothy Loudon.

I think Dorothy Loudon was at the time a surprise choice for the role, based partly on her previous work but also because after she'd won the Tony for ANNIE and been nominated for BALLROOM the past two years running, and it was somewhat unexpected for her to step in to something as a replacement.

This article goes as far to say that Parsons was offered the role of Lovett in the road company.
Miss Parsons has been offered Angela Lansbury's role
