In today's magazine section of the N.Y. Times there is an excellent, lengthy article about Christine Ebersole written by Alex Witchel entitled "Between a Mother and a Daughter", about her preparation for the roles of Edith and Little Edie in GREY GARDENS. It also discusses her family life and her former show businesss endeavors. Ebersole comes across as a very sweet, devoted family person, and a trouper when it comes to her career. Log on to NYTimes.com and then to Theater. It's well worth reading and will make you root for her to receive the Tony Award even if you haven't seen GREY GARDENS yet.
Great article - thanks for the heads up and the link!
Regardless of whether you are a fan of hers or not, one has to admire her. She's an extraordinary woman - being the breadwinner of the household, being Mom to a brood of kids and taking care of her elderly Mom (who sounds like she might have Aelzheimers) at home. A beautiful quote:
“You know, I experience psychic phenomena so people think I must be crazy,” she said. “But you have to be accessible and intelligent to be a good actor. I might not have gotten the best grades in school, but I have a very high level of emotional intelligence. You have to be open to receive. Because that’s the grace and the burden of the life of an actor. You not only see the suffering, you are the suffering. You become the vehicle with which to convey the humanity. That’s what makes us who we are.”
I thought this article about her was the best I have read.
That poor Guastavino's manager. I'm sure he never imagined that his hissy fit would immortalize him forever.
Fantastic article.
I started to read this article very late last night and then realized it was really, really long...but I couldn't stop. Then after I read it, I was so invigorated I couldn't sleep! So human, so real despite the enormity of her talent.
what a gorgeous read
shes had to go thru so much- with her husband, her infertility, her mother, and not to mention only getting paid not even $600 a week for GREY GARDENS Off-Broadway (sorry, i find that incredibly low).
but still, Ebersole just grins and bears it, and is so graceful, and i really admire that so much.
and i love how she tells her kids when they ask her for help on homework, "I missed school that day." :)
Just about everyone makes that much money for a starring role off-Broadway.
sorry, it just seems kind of low.
Amazing woman! I think that's all I can say.
Thank you for posting this! I had no idea about her children.

It IS a great article and she is a fantastic, fascinating woman. But I wonder...how come Audra and LBB and Debra Monk and Donna Murphy don't get a "St. Ebersole" article in the New York Times?

Because they're not "St. Ebersole"? I mean... that might be grasping at straws, but you never know.
