Posted: 5/30/03 at 10:06pm

Hey guys, I'm gonna see Falsettos in Hollywood CA on Sunday the 31st!! It is starring three of the orignal cast members!!

Michael Rupert as Marvin (on cd as well)
Stephen Bogardus as Whizzer (on cd as well)
Chip Zien as Mendel (on cd as well)

I have seen the show several times before in stock shows and such but I am excited to see the originals! Wow, how fun.

Are there any Falsettos fans out there?? Updated On: 6/2/03 at 10:06 PM

Falsettos is actually part of a trilogy. The first section is called "In Trousers". Chip Zien originally portrayed Marvin in that show and then Stephen Bogardus later played Marvin in the same show.

yes, I'm well aware of In trousers, as I have the cd and libretto. Its very fun, but bot as good. I did think it abit weird to have Chip as Marvin then transfer him to Mendel, hmm don't know what happened there, lol. re: re: FALSETTOS in Los Angeles w/ Original Cast!! ;) Updated On: 5/30/03 at 11:00 PM

FALSETTOS IN NEW YORK......Several months ago I had the thril when Playwrites Horizon opened it's mew space, to see most of the original FALSETTOS cast (both MARCH OF THE FALSETTOS and FALSETTOLAND)perform a concert version and it was fantastic (two Trinas). I've met the author William Finn several times (he recently had a show ELEGIES w/Betty Buckley at Lincoln Center) and I also directed a condensed version of FALSETTOS as a MFA Directing Student......this is one that should be revived on Broadway !!!!!!

It was done as a fundraiser with the original cast for Playwrights Horizons.

I like the quirkiness of "In Trousers". I think the music for the women is good. "Set Those Sails", "I'm Wearing A Hat" "How The Body Falls Apart" "Love Me For What I Am" are all very interesting songs. I wish someone would film the entire trilogy for PBS.

#6They Recorded Live CD!!! :)

When I arrived, 15 mins late, grrrr, we sat down just as they finished announcing all the cast members. We immediately realized it was a concert version of the show, and that it was being recorded for cd!!! Wow, I can't wait for it to come out.

Chip Zien as Mendel (Into the Woods, A New Brain) Stephen Bogardus as Whizzer (The Dead, Ragtime) and Michael Rupert as Marvin (Sweet Charity) were all absolutely AMAZING live. Wow, they are powerhouse performers. I couldn't believe that they've been with the show nearly 30 years and their voices are stronger than ever! I'm sooo glad it was recorded, now we'll have two recordings of the our favorite cult show!! They Recorded Live CD!!! :)

The boy who played Jason, Asher Book, sounded exactly like the boys who played Jason on the cds, which was uncanny.

Charlotte and Cordelia were played by Kathy Garrick ("All the good men are gay" vocalist Gay 90's Musical) and Amy Pietz (Caroline's best friend in Caroline in the City). Both actresses were funny, and Kathy has an amazingly strong voice. It was interesting that Charlotte (Kathy) had a higher sqeakier voice, ala Cordelia (Janet Metz) of the cd, and last nights Cordelia had a smokier, yet sopranoy voice. Regardless, it worked! They Recorded Live CD!!! :)

The weakest leak, I felt, was Marnie Mosiman, the actres who played Trina. Although her acting was fine she didn't have a strong voice for those infamous belty high notes that Alison Fraser and Faith Prince seemed to master on the original cast recordings. They Recorded Live CD!!! :)

I REALLY enjoyed the performance and CAN'T WAIT for the LIVE recording!! Woo hoo! They Recorded Live CD!!! :)

Well, I'll put my two cents in, a year later!

I'm music directing Falsettos right now. I really love this show. I cry all over the keyboard every night during "I Never Wanted To Love You" and "What Would I Do?" Call me sappy, but it gets me every time. I'll be interested to see how audience in Michigan take to it. It is not a conventionally written show, and we don't get a whole lot of theatre like this here. So, I hope it goes over well and people can get to the core of the piece and really enjoy this wonderful musical. Whether you like Finn's writing or not, you have to admit, it is a powerful piece that will make you feel SOMETHING (whatever that something may be). Whenever I get worked up about life, Bush, Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment, work, the war, I repeat Trina's lines over and over "Everything will be alright", and I think, hey, I could be one of these people!

I am a HUGE Falsettos fan! (as I am of anything by William Finn - who I consider one of the real geniuses of musical theatre writing). I love the whole score but 3 songs in particular stand out to me - "What More Can I Say?" is about as exquisite and simplistically truthful as a love song can get; "Unlikely Lovers" is just plain beautiful; and "What Would I Do?" with its combination of power, heartbreaking emotion and stunning melody just blows me away.

Any idea when the new concert CD is due for release?

Well, I've been wondering al this myself! It was an AWESOME experience and a WONDERFUL cast! I can't wait for it to be released. The only weak point is the actress playing Trina. Her acting was solid, but her vocals didn't stand up to everybody elses. But even so, it's live, it's complete with the ORIGINAL MEN!!!

I am also a big Falsettos fan! The original cast reunited for the tour run at the Doolittle several years ago. They temporarily replaced to tour cast just for LA. The original cast also reunited for (can't remember the name of the organization) that does a concert version that is recored for radio broadcast and archives. That was quite a while ago! Would love to know what you posting refers to!

I loved falsettos when I saw it. I ended up going twice because I wanted to see all three of the guys perform together...(sadly it never happened) This first time I went, Chip Zien was out...and the second time I went, Stephen Bogardus was out...but I loved it...I was in 11th grade..and remember that show fondly!

I just listened to Falsettos for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I still crack up every time I hear the lyrics about how Jewish kids can't play baseball. I say this with nothing but affection, because I'm a Jewish girl, but it is so very very true. :)

I have that number on video from the tonys. Very funny. So Robactor; where did you see this? They just did it a few months ago as a staged reading in Los Angeles with the exact same cast.

i saw it in Hollywood CA in the summer. I Think they redid it in Los Angeles a short while afterwards. I saw a concert reading and they all had their vocal books in hand. But it was the whole show and it was recorded live! I was sitting right behind the sound engineers, and at the end of the show they had the actors resing some of the parts again!
