Posted: 2/3/09 at 11:09pmWell that's interesting. You know you could still claim to have "won" a Tony - you'd just have to omit the small detail that you'd won it ON EBAY.

The real mystery is how anyone won a Tony for a show as ugly as Grind.
But I'm sure Flossie is plotzing and Ruthie is perturbed.

Posted: 2/4/09 at 9:03amI think it's really sad too. Didn't she have any family that even wanted it?

Posted: 2/4/09 at 11:33amWhen GRIND was running there weren't too many other shows to give awards to. It pretty much won it by default.

I remember. And her costumes actually were great, as always.
But what a turkey that was.

Posted: 2/4/09 at 12:07pmYeah, GRIND was pretty horrific. A couple of cool Fosse-doctored moments, especially a reverse striptease where the strippers put on their clothes as sexily as they would otherwise take them off.

One of her Tony-award-winning designs for Grind:

Maybe her family really needed the money. And maybe whoever bought it is going to donate it to the Gershwin Theatre Hall of Fame or whatever it's called.
I thought her costumes for CITY OF ANGELS were brilliant, BTW.

I'd buy one of her sketches if I only had the money, especially some of the Follies one recently up for auction.
Why aren't these things at the Lincoln Center Library? Their recent Female Desingers exhibit was marvelous, but I didn't notice much of Klotz's work. While it was a treat to see Mrs. Anna's hoopskirt from the original King and I, it would have been more of a treat to have seen one from Follies.
