I really didn't like the original RENT script. Roger singing 'RENT' onstage with the Well Hungarians and Maureen getting like... ALL of Mark's LVB lines? I wasn't a fan.
I personally liked RENT's sreenplay, despite the plot holes. *shrug*
But yes, read The Perks On Being A Wallflower, like... now. THATS good.

It's not that there weren't problems (in fact the two you mention were a couple of my major problems with it), but there was something in the way it was written that just brought the characters to life. MINUS Angel who i feel was represented in a strange way in Chbosky's screen play, but that could have been easily changed. Overall reading this FEELS like Rent should feel as a movie. Again not that i didn't enjoy the finished product, but I feel bad that the screenplay with Chbosky's name on it is getting ripped, when the majority of his material is gone. I think what is striking about his version is the relationships between the characters. I especially love how Mark is portrayed in it. PM me if anyone wants to read it that can't just be warned it is VERY different. But that doesn't mean bad.
Edit: Although I agree completely with LVB, there is something about the way they set that opening (The song Rent)with the Well Hungarians the year prior that just hits me, especially the focus on the bartender's reaction. I do like that song in its original context but i feel it works well.
