Posted: 8/12/03 at 7:31amI'm thinking back to my youth --- the first rock musicals I saw were "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "Jesus Chirst Superstar" (saw both in San Francisco). They hold a dear place in my heart.

Posted: 8/12/03 at 8:21amI love Tommy and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but Rent is my favorite rock musical hands down. I never knew "Joseph" qualified as a rock musical. That music doesnt sound like rock to me.

My favorites are also Joseph and Jesus Christ Superstar. Although Joseph may not be a "rock" musical in the strict sense of the word, since it seems to have music from almost every genre -- pop, country, carribean,
.

Posted: 8/12/03 at 1:31pm...would shows like "Our House" and "Closer Then Heaven" count as rock? Cause I rather liked the music to "Closer Then Heaven" (Could be that I am a Pet Shop Boys Fan) Updated On: 8/12/03 at 01:31 PM

Eric, wouldn't the song sung by the Pharoh qualify as a rock song?
Another to add to my list -- Godspell

It depends on teh definition of 'Rock musical' you use.
Rent.
Jesus Christ Superstar
Rocky Horror Show
GREASE! (if you consider it a rock musical. And te original version -- not the watered down version we get now! Although, I do prefer the sped up tempos and orchestrations of the revival)

Posted: 8/12/03 at 6:09pmHoly Crap! I'm in Godspell right now and I forgot to mention it. That is my favorite rock musical ever. The music is unbelievable. It's SO much fun. That's my favorite hands down.

We Will Rock You WAS wonderful. I saw it twice when I was living in London this summer, the last time was my last night in London and it was a great way to end my time there. Hannah Jane Fox (Scaramouche) and Kerry Ellis (Meat) totally blew me away. It didn't seem like the West End celebrates their actors like Broadway does....but I'll open a new post about that.
I also loved Tommy and Rent. WWRY and Tommy are my top rock shows, although I think Tommy had a better book...just my opinion, though.

Chess. That's not to say that I've ever been 100% satisfied with a production or version of Chess, but I think it's far and away the best of its genre. I'm something of an internet guru on the subject, and I'm actually production dramaturg for an upcoming production (or three, depending). It's "my show," so to speak. I hate the new Swedish production, though, based mostly on story and mistreatment of the characters. And on cutting half the musical themes from the show.
Rent. I've seen it five times on Broadway. Of course I love it. It's the alternate to Chess as "my show."
Jesus Christ Superstar. Just the one I see the most potential in of the remaining rock shows.
I also really like tick, tick...BOOM! and Tommy. And I've been addicted at times to cast albums of Godspell and Rocky Horror (Fynsworth Alley and Broadway Revival, respectively).

Yeah, I'm a rock musical guy.
