I was just thinking about all the musical theatre composers I know off-hand(not too many) and I was struck by the lack of estrogen. Is there a reason that there aren't very many female Broadway composers? or are there a lot that I, in my ignorance, am just unaware of?
Ah- I forgot her. good point :) can you think of any others?

Just off the top of my head:
BROADWAY
Jeanine Tesori
Mary Rodgers
Lucy Simon
OTHERWISE
Jenny Giering
Georgia Stitt
Goldrich & Heisler
There are some female lyricists as well, including Lynn Ahrens, Marsha Norman, and Mindi Dickstein.

Thanks Caleb (and Matthew for the effort) for pointing out some of the females most of which I am embarrased to admit I have never heard of. BUT, does anyone else think it is a mostly male-dominated profession?
Hey this is where someone like me likes to come in...yay!
Im a female who is not primarily a composer, in fact I act more than compose and work with kids more than I act...however, I have been published. All that being said, yes you are absolutley right. Usually if a woman is involved with the music of a broadway show its the lyrics. Like Mindi Dickstein for Little Women.
But I hope to change that. Or at least add to the number of women involved.
someday...
