LuvinBroadway, most performers are always scheduled to and are indeed there for the full performances schedule. It is very, very rare for there to be a case where a star has someone else in their place at matinees. There are indeed cases where it has occured in muscials. I believe Loni Ackerman began playing matinee performances in EVITA for Patti Lupone before taking over the role from her. And I think there are times when the part of Christine in PHANTOM is played by a different performer at matinees, but I am not sure. And I am not sure if it is with everyone who has done the part.
Even with what are generally considered some of the most demanding parts in the musical theater, you can be assured that the greats are always there and the neargreats(perhaps) are at least almost always there when scheduled. It is always wise when purchasing with a star in mind to see if they have a vacation break scheduled at that time. I have been lucky in my life and have never been to a show where the "star" was out. It is amazing with the volume I have seen, it is very amazing actually. Merman in GYPSY, Channing in Dolly, Bacall in anything she's done, I don't think any of them ever missed a show......and of course they played each matinee too:)
Harvey?? The man is an angel on earth. Of course he plays all performances of FIDDLER and he would give you an autograph even if he had broken both of his hands. He is a love of a man.

Ackerman, Terri Klausner, Derin Altay, and Nancy Opel were all matinee Evitas at one point or another.
Merman missed a week of performances during the run of Gypsy after she burst a blood vessel in her throat. She also missed one to attend her daughter's college graduation. Other than that, she never missed a performance in almost four decades of performing.
