Hi there--
Can anyone suggest a good song to audition with for Fiddler? I have a soprano range for more traditional stuff, but enjoy singing more as a belter (think "white soul singer like Maureen in 'Rent'"). I just know they're going to be hearing "Matchmaker" all freakin' day long. And while I can sing it in either classical or belting style, I'm just trying to think of something else that will show I can sing within the context of the show while standing out just this/much more. I'm auditioning for Tzeitel (never was in the show but the way I grew up, I pretty much *am* her!). Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

if you're auditioning for Tzeitel they will probably want to hear Matchmaker..Tzeitels part, to be sure you can belt the D at the end.
If you have a good traditional soprano, consider auditioning for Hodel - she has a gorgeous solo song. Tzeitel doesn't have to be as much of a singer.

Yeah, I thought about that. Oh the irony: I could probably sing Hodel's song...but I (gulp) don't like it that much. I guess singing Tzeitel's "Matchmaker" song ought to be the one.
I was just curious if there any songs from other shows that I haven't been able to think of, that are comparable but not so 'blah' as "Matchmaker," know what I mean?

I'm In Love With A Wonderful Guy- South Pacific
Many A New Day - Okalahoma
Waitin' For My Dearie- Brigadoon
My White Knight- Music Man
These are ingenue songs, but they have a little bit of guts behind them without being contemporary.
I sang Many A New Day when I auditioned for FIDDLER and was cast as Hodel. I think it's too soprano range-y and could backfire if you want Tzeitel.
Wonderful Guy is a good idea.

I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy is a great choice.
But i would just sing from the show. If you're being seriously considered, you'll have to anyway. so just go in and say you know it and tell them that you can do it. THEN if they DON"T want to hear it, they will say What else did you bring.
Good luck!

Where are they doing Fiddler? Is it a professional production? I don't really have any other advice than what has already been given. Break a leg!

No, it's just community theatre in the Chicago area. I haven't auditioned for anything in a long time, just trying to get ideas here. Thanks for all the advice folks! :)

Thank you, I will!
Btw--Been meaning to ask...what is "rathnait" a reference to? Never heard that one. :)
Tzeitel's part of Fiddler would probably be best, I hate to tell you. That's a rough role to audition for, if you want to avoid being considered for Hodel! But I'm In Love With a Wonderful Guy would also be a really good choice, so definitely consider it.
When I auditioned for Tzeitel, I sang Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, which was the worst idea ever. I'd had a horrible singing day, and that was the only thing I could squeak out, for some reason. I was about a centimeter away from getting the part of Hodel, which I, like you, REALLY didn't want. Plus, it's ridiculously overdone. Luckily, someone else with a far more gorgeous voice came along, and I got Tzeitel. Pointless story because you aren't even considering that song, but in short, I know how you feel!
