HBO's film adaptation of "Angels in America" will probably be nominated for quite a number of Emmy Awards. The nominations will be announced this Thu 7/15.
Here's hoping Mary Louise Parker, Patrick Wilson, Ben Shenkman, Jeffrey Wright, and Justin Kirk (and Emma Thompson?) get nods in the Best Supporting categories. Meryl Streep and Al Pacino will probably nail it for Leads as at the Golden Globes and SAGs.
Another award or two for the mantles of Tony Kushner and Mike Nichols, too!

Meryl Streep and Al Pacino will without a doubt win the catagory. The supporting cast has a very good chance at winning. Does anyone know why they didnt release this in theaters?
It has to get some.... I hope it wins!!

I think at theatre release is out of the question because of the length. It's six hours long. Granted a 2 part viewing with an intermission would be grand but only art houses would probably show it.
And, it's rated "MA" for mature audiences on HBO which takes it beyond "R." In a commercial theater that would narrow the eligible audience.
But, don't get me wrong...I would LOVE to see this on a big screen with a good sound system. The opening credits alone would blow us away. :o)

It deserves all the awards! I think Justin Kirk deserves one and he shouldn't be looked over since he's not a big name or anything.
Al Pacino gave an astounding performance.
Best of luck to them!

TV-MA is actually roughly the equivalent of "R" from the MPAA.

They didnt have to release them at the same time. They could of done like Kill Bill or Lord of the Rings did. Release part one and then later release part 2.

Omigosh...now THAT would have been a cool idea, since that's how it happened on stage...
Somebody call HBO right away!
I wanna see this happen soooo bad!

Here's what backstage.com has to say about AIA at the Emmys:
"In the longform races, meanwhile, look for HBO's six-hour miniseries masterpiece "Angels in America" to clean up and glean perhaps a record number of nominations."

I think its a little late to release it in theaters now that a lot of people have seen in on HBO and they are releasing it on DVD, but that would of been a good idea.

I hope Angels in America wins big! It was amazing.
I think it would be a bit late for a theater release(as already mentioned), but It's a shame it wasn't.. because most of the stuff in theaters lately has been trash (or at least I think so..) I believe the DVD is coming out in early Sept? I can't wait!

I think this movie is one of the all time greatest movies ever made. The cast was amazing. All I can say about the book, or screenplay i guess, is that Tony Kushner is a genious. I cant wait till the DVD comes out.
I never saw the stage show. Did they change it for the movie? I am guessing that since Tony Kushner wrote the screenplay, he wouldnt of made any major changes.

BWayBoy:
If you have the chance to see it on stage, DO SO. I saw it again last month in a community theatre production, and it is such a wonderful piece. I would also highly recommend buying the script and read Kushner's wonderful words.
The HBO version is a bit shorter than the stage version. The stage version of Millenium Approaches has a scene with Hannah Pitt and the real estate agent about selling her place in SLC before moving to New York that does not appear in Episode 3. Peristroika also opens with a monologue by the Worlds Oldest Living Bolshevik (sp?) which does not appear in the HBO-Nichols version. There are also other word/monologue changes, but the dramatic import of the piece carries through.
I've already placed my order for the DVD. And I hope to wear it out from repeated viewings.
