In this week's Entertainment Weekly, Rent along with The Producers are listed with some other movies generating early Oscar buzz. It is the one with Scarlett Johansson on the cover along with Ewan MacGreggor.
Basically any film that isn't a children's flick or "stupid comedy" and is released in the Fall/Winter generates Oscar Buzz.
TRUE buzz happens around Thanksgiving, when a good amount of "buzz" films have been seen and reviewers can compare.

It's July. It's far too early to be making Oscar predictions. Last year (around Nov.), Movie City News predicted that 'Phantom of the Opera' was going to win the Oscar for Best Picture (!). And 'Million Dollar Baby,' the movie that actually won the Oscar, wasn't even on anyone's radar until Dec.
It is too early, but still kind of mind-boggling.
It is only July, but I was already thinking Oscar buzz when the film was announced for a November release date.
Production companies pick their "best" films lots of times to be released in Fall/Winter to purposefully generate "buzz" in order to make more money. Moviegoers say "Hey - so-and-so magazine thinks this film is gonna win an Oscar! Let's go see it, it must be good!"
It's all about money AND Oscar promotion, BECAUSE Oscar-winning films make money (generally speaking).
'Alexander' had Oscar buzz last year too.
Was there ever a point in history when seperate Best Performance awards were given to Movie Musical actors/actresses? I don't think there was, but just curious because a friend of mine says he heard of some awards ceremony doing this recently, but I don't recall hearing anything about that and find it pointless seeing as this is the first year in a long time that two big studio movie musicals were released in the same year, meaning competition is relatively non-existant. "And the nominees for Best Lead Actor in a Musical are.....ummm, well, Richard Gere for Chicago. That's it. You win, I guess."
CJWesselman, I don't understand what you mean. You mean a movie musical wasn't nominated for Best Picture, but its leading actor or actress were nominated for Best Actor or Best Actress??
Sorry, looking back at my question I realize I didn't really clearify. What I mean is that, along with there being an award for Best Actor/Best Actress and so forth in regular movies, there were seperate categories for Movie Musicals. Your question makes me highly doubt it seeing as if you did that, you'd have to seperate them for every category. Yikes....like the Oscars aren't long enough already. lol. i guess what my question now becomes is more like, are there any awards (past or present) that were/are specifically geared towards movie musicals?
The Golden Globes break musicals and comedies into their own category and drama into its own category.
I like that the Golden Globes does this, but the Oscars combines them. You get the best of both worlds.

How do you think this film will do at the box office? I know there is a huge rent following, but do you think even a lot of people who aren't broadway lovers will see it? It seems like everyone, even people who aren't familiar with broadway, know what rent is, so who knows...I haven't even seen the show but I can't wait for the movie. I really want to get out to NYC to see it before the movie opens because I don't want to be one of those people who says they love the movie without seeing the show on stage (like seeing a movie based on a book without reading the book and then saying I love the movie). Is Rent currently on tour anywhere? I know it came to my area a couple years ago and am hoping it comes back :)
There's a new tour starting soon, I think. Check the tour listings on this site, perhaps?
I think how well the movie will do in the box office is really anyone's guess. Surely RENTheads alone aren't going to make the movie a "box-office smash success," or whatever, and I think that how many "other" people see it will depend greatly on the marketing strategy that ends up being employed. I don't know that it's going to be a particularly easy thing to market, but we'll see.
I don't think it'll break any records, but it won't be overlooked neither. We'll see how critics take it and how it's promoted...
I think this will be one of those times were I bite my fingers off in fear/anticipation of the reviews.

I like the trailer they're using and think that it will attract people. My friend told me that she saw the trailer before seeing bewitched and she wants to see the movie because she liked the song (seasons of love) in the trailer. Also, there are a couple "names" that might attract people (i.e. jesse l. martin, taye diggs, maybe rosario dawson).
I'm sure it won't tank at the box office like Phantom, but it certainly won't be Chicago either
I do believe Rent will do better box office than the Producers....... face it, it's a rock opera, geared towards the younger generation with lots of disposable cash that will see it again & again. Demographically, the Producers crowd is a little older without to much free time on thier hands, and mortages to pay.
THE PRODUCERS may pull a 'Chicago.' Very uneasy about RENT. If its subject matter isn't enough, there's the fact that it's a fully-sung film. And if THAT doesn't clinch it - Chris Columbus is directing.
Critically??? definately. Financially??? I'm not so sure
May as well share a dream I had few nights ago:
Mel Brooks was on a stage, speaking into a microphone. An Oscar statuette was in his right hand, holding it up in the air. A group of people were behind him, men and women, all the men wearing tuxes and the women in dresses.
Mel made the audience laugh, and dedicated the award to the memory of his late wife Anne Bancroft.
Dead serious - this was I dreamt last night. Let's see if it comes true...
yes, but the August before chicago came out EW predicted chicago would win best picture, and it did. so dont count either of them out however i say rent has stronger chance
