Is it safe to say that Michael Riedel is the Kathy Griffin of musical theater, or is that giving him too much credit?
WAAAAAAAAY too much credit! Riedel hasn't 1% of Griffin's wit. Or humanity.

I think you make a good point. And I think that's his point in this interview.
He says he isn't in awe of these people so he's not afraid to call them out when they misstep.

"What other Broadway personality would you like me to try to sit down with?"
John Lahr, Jennifer Ehle, George C. Wolfe, Mary Louise Wilson, Janet McTeer, Cherry Jones, Zoe Caldwell, Judith Light, Lea Salonga, Danny Burstein, Viola Davis, Edward Albee, Patricia Clarkson, Tony Walton, Liam Neeson, Alfre Woodard, Frances McDormand, Dianne Wiest, Alan Cumming, Neil Simon, Sheldon Harnick, Gabriel Byrne, Henry David Hwang, Katie Finneran, Tony Kushner, Lynn Nottage, Angela Lansbury, Rosemary Harris, Christine Ebersole, Jim Dale, Kathleen Chalfant, etc., etc.
In other words, some one who gives all appearances of actually having a soul and an abiding respect for others who devote themselves to the theater.
