Although a huge fan of Bill Finn, I wasn't terribly enthusiastic about seeing yet another evening of a compilation of his songs. I know them by heart. Selections from "Falsettos," "Infinite Joy" and "Elegies," sung by the A List (Callaway, Testa, Carmello, Buckley) live on my ipod. So why in hell would I want to watch a group of no-name, regional performers have at Bill's stuff?
Well I went tonight, and the good news is, these folks are very very good and D.B. Bonds, even more than that, a charismatic, golden voiced, revelation, whose performance of "Hitch Hiking Across America" is now, for me, the definitive version of the song.
For those unfamiliar with Bill Finns work, this show would serve as an excellent primer.
For the rest of us Finn Freaks, it's a really gratifying way to revisit some old friends, who prove to be just as exciting as when we first met them. This delightful cast more than does them justice.
