First time in NY

Some of the earlier threads got me to thinking about the first time I went to NY. (I mean the first time on my own - without Ma and Pa).

For me it was in '65 when I took a charter bus to see the Beatles. I remember the bus driver (who was very nice but who really didn't have a CLUE) decided to do us a favor and drive around Times Square and other famous Manhattan spots and give us a little tour. All we wanted to do was get out of there and get to Queens! (Shea you know). It's hard to believe today.

What's your story?

I don't think it was my first time, but I remember being taken downtown to a huge hole in the ground and being told that they were building the tallest buildings in the world there.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

My Mom took me on the plane from Miami to NYC to drop me off for a summer course at School of American Ballet when I was 12. She stayed the first week (not with me) and we saw A MATTER OF GRAVITY together as well as some evenings of American Ballet Theatre at NYState Theatre.

I moved to NYC at 17.

Young and wide-eyed, it was my first trip abroad and one of the places we visited was NYC. Our host took us to a Broadway show that was about to close. I was so amazed and the leading lady was really great. I did not remember her name, and it was only many, many years later that I read that she did the role for the entire run of the show.

The show was FUNNY GIRL and the amazing leading lady who sang so beautifully was a New Yorker called BARBRA

I was about 5 years old. My parents took me in to go to FAO and I freaked about the crowds and they had to take me home.

That's a really great story jo. Anyways my first time in nyc was in 2001 (right before 9/11) and i remember being really really excited just looking at time square. Back then, i really didnt FULLY understand what the whole broadway community was/is and i didnt know nyc was made up of islands (yes, i was young). My first show was Les Miz and i didnt know it then, but i was seeing the great shuler hensley (sp?) as javert. My last show that trip was Aida and that was when Taylor Dayne was in it, heather was out that day, but at least i got to witness Adam's performance.

my first time in nyc was after 9/11, after i moved to nj, and we just drove around in the car. my first broadway show was Into the Woods revival cast with Vanessa Williams. I fell IN LOVE with Broadway from the moment I cam to nyc, but ITW made me want to be on the stage even more than ever cause i had lived in cali and loved singing and acting, but ITW made me KNOW it's what i want to do. It was actually quite random how I happened about going to see the show... my new friend was having her birthday and her parents got her amazing seats for ITW, and her sister ended up not being able to come last minute so she called me and asked me if I could go... needless to say, i was overwhelmed and shocked at how amazing a show could be. it's not my favorite broadway show now, at least not that cast, but it will always be my first thought of broadway. :)

i had actually also passed through it when driving from Boston (where lived for a while) to other places... like Washington D.C. prolly or something like that.
And also from stopping there during flights.
i always remembered going through it... but never actually going into Manhattan, i guess on could say, and always wanting too.
i'm so glad I finally got to!

My first trip to NY was when I was about 5 years old. We didn't go anywhere in New York really - just kind of drove through the state on our way to New England. But we did stop to visit the Statue of Liberty. All I can really remember was my grandmother had broken her leg before we left and it was in a cast. We were able to go to the front of an insanely huge line for the ferry and I thought it was the neatest thing! I also remember screaming down the sewers for Michaelangelo - for at that time I was in love with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Yes, I was an odd child...

My first real trip to actual NY was in December 2001. We just went up for the day and walked around Central Park and Times Square. I was just in complete awe of the entire place but it was so freaking freezing. We went to the Brooklyn Diner for lunch and had to wait outside for like 45 minutes in the cold but it was there that I discovered the best chicken parm *ever.* We also went to the Disney Store and FAO. I really wanted to see the piano from Big (which doesn't really exist - grr!) and it was so crowded with Christmas shopping that we had to leave. It was then that I fell in love with the city. For Christmas that year my dad got me tickets to see The Lion King and in April of 2002 I discovered Broadway. Now I'm hooked...

I remember I was 14 years old and I was in NYC for a school field trip. We did the usual tourist things such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We never got to walk around Times Square and such which disappointed me greatly.

My first time in NY was when I was 6 years old, arriving in JFK from Israel. I don't remember much, except that the flight was really boring and we got whisked away to live in my uncle's house in NJ right afterwards.

I remember the first show I saw in NYC was Matters OF the Heart with PAtti LuPone. I was with my mom, but I can't really say there was a better experiencefor me...except for seeing Bernedette IN GYPSY. Two of my dreams down! hehe

Oh Mamie - that's a blast from the past! I don't remember my first time in the city - been in and out of it my entire life. But I do remember the subway ride out to Shea in '65 and '66 to see The Beatles. I believe my first trip without parents was in '65 to see the DC5 somewhere in Manhatten or maybe the Stones at the Academy of Music which I remember to be in Brooklyn. What a fun time that was........

bogey_Live: BERNADETTE! i love her... GYPSY was surreal! absolutely amazing! it was definitely the highlight of all of my viewings of Broadway shows.

I grew up there (well, spent my childhood until age 10 and then moved to NJ) but I must say I REALLY envy tourists! I would love to have a memory of being in New York City for the first time. I never get tired of seeing tourists in Times Square :)

Born and raised in Manhattan.
I could not live anywhere else. I WOULD MISS BROADWAY! I love travel but nothing compares to NYC!
I LOVE NY.

We lived in New York until I was four, but I don't remember much about it except we had a crappy apartment. We went back in 2000 and stayed in the city and I was in love. We drove in and I remember that we had to drive through Times Square to get to the hotel. And to do that, we had to drive right past the Winter Garden Theater, and it was the first time I ever saw the giant billboard for CATS and I was speechless. Seeing Times Square for the first time was awesome enough, but driving right past CATS...it still makes me shiver. I dragged my parents back there quite a few times during the trip...

You saw DC5?! I'm soooo jealous! I did see the Rolling Stones, Chad & Jeremy, the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, many others back then. You're only a kid-teen once!

Spent my summers 'down the shore' and saw anyone and everyone, including Joplin, at Convention Hall in Asbury Park. Still am going strong - saw McCartney 3X last nummer and would go again tomorrow if he were around. Concerts ARE getting a bit pricey, at $250+ a pop I now have to pick and choose.

Mamie, Now we're really showing our age, aren't we? Oh - that hurts....

However, I do have an early city memory if Coney Island counts as NY. I remember going to Nathans: I must have been 3 or 4 at the time and peeing in the street. Don't know what made me remember that.....
