Hey all! I'm a Chicago actress planning my first trip to the Great White Way, and I can't choose what to see! We're going to be in town October 19-23. We've slotted time for two shows. I need some input.

First, I'm not into spending my whole vacation in line... how much of a pain is going to the TKTS booth vs. pre-ordering online?

Here are the shows I'm kinda interested in (no particular order):
Grey Gardens
Drowsy Chaperone
Avenue Q
Spamalot

I'm also sorta interested in some "straight" theatre, and that just muddies up the whole decision process:
Coast of Utopia Part I
Heartbreak House
Suddenly Last Summer
Wrecks
Losing Louie

To give you an idea of my taste, I'm HEARTBROKEN that we're too late for Sweeney Todd and too early for Vertical Hour. I'm intrigued by Grey Gardens, but am afraid of it being a disappointment of Sunset Blvd proportions.

OK guys, I know I'm in serious Broadway fan waters here, so fight amongst yourselves :) Any additional suggestions are also welcome.
Thanks in advance!

You can see a maximum of 7 shows.
I highly reccomend Drowsy, especially for an actress, but I haven't seen the others.

Can't help you as far as recommending shows (I'm sure many here will be able to), but as far as TKTS vs. pre-ordering, it all depends on what matters to you.

Do you really want to make sure you're going to have tickets for a particular show so there's no hassle or worrying when you get to NY? Are you willing to pay full price--i.e. up to $111.25, plus a service charge for pre-ordering--to be sure you have those tickets? If so, I would pre-order (at least for whatever show you're really hell-bent on seeing and wouldn't mind paying top dollar for).

Do you want a spontaneous day in the theatre district, sacrificing some time and certainty, to get a great (up to 50% off) discount on a show? Do you not mind being a little unsure about whether you will get the show you really want? If so, the TKTS line is for you--I hear that the line at the temporary location, at the Marquis Theatre, goes pretty quickly.

It's really hard to recommend one over the other, because it depends on a) how sure you want to be that you'll see a certain show, and b) how much you're willing to pay. Both have their merits, of course (although personally I won't be shelling out full price for pre-ordered tickets anytime soon, but that's me). Enjoy your trip!

Several shows on your list have discounts available on Broadwaybox.com. You can get your tickets in advance and not worry about what might or might not be available at TKTS.

Hallelujah. I knew about this board, theatremania, and playbill online. None of them had the Avenue Q discounted, and that's what my hubby really wanted to see...

Now to make up my own mind.... Hrm.
