So I am making my first trip to NY in September. I promise not to stop suddenly when walking down the street. So one of the things I am wondering about is theatre tickets. For instance if I go to the TKTS booth early enough in the day am I likely to get a good selection of shows? Or are there some big ones that I will never get tickets for this way?
I am gutted by the way that I won't get a chance to see Sunday in the Park with George.
Pretty much a guarantee that Wicked and Jersey Boys will not be on TKTS for the foreseeable future. Likely The Lion King falls in that category too. And now In The Heights.
Other than that, most shows do show up there frequently.
Many thanks, Wicked was one of the shows I was hoping to see.
Tix in advance if you can find them. If not, lottery (always difficult) or the cancellation line (crapshoot) are your only options for that. If your party is willing to split up for the show, there may be single tickets available in various places if it appears to be sold out for a larger party.

Just to add to that excellent link, I don't think it's necessary to get to the TKTS line really early, as theaters send over unsold tickets almost to curtain time. So theoretically you have just as much of a chance of getting seats to a particular show at 7 PM as you do at 3 PM. If we are going to try TKTS, we usually try to get there by around 5--the lines are sometimes shorter and we still have plenty of time to go for dinner.
I have to say that recently we have been using the discount codes from Playbill and BroadwayBox rather than TKTS--the savings seem to be about the same, there are no lines and you have more leisure time to pick your seats. But those options are probably best if you have a particular show in mind as your top pick.

September is just about the best time to visit NY. The weather is is nice, and it's one of the slowest times for tourism. (don't worry, the city will still be crowded)
I like that you stated "I promise not to stop suddenly when walking down the street". People like you are especially welcome.
I also recommend broadwaybox.com or playbill.com for discounts. Prices are almost the same, you get to see where your seats are located, and saves valuable time and uncertainty.
Enjoy!
If you want to see WIcked for TKTS booth price, go alone and pick up the partial view seat H27 off ticketmaster. Your view is PERFECT and I would highly recommend it to first time viewers of the show. Just call them and ask for seat H27. You can see most of the backdrop and all of the action, I can PM you a pic of the stage from that seat if you want. The seat is 55-75 dollars depending on the day you go.
